HOW DID YOU GET THIS JOB?

I spotted the job ad in the Evening Mail. I knew that I wanted a very people oriented job and that an office job definitely was not me, so the idea of working for the NEC Group appealed straight away.

I wanted a job where I would look forward to going into work every morning and because I meet and work with so many interesting people throughout my day, with each day being different to the last, I was ecstatic when they offered me the job.

TYPICAL SALARY?
£15,000 - £17,500
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I work with a team of 7 people. Our role is diverse and one a typical day we can find ourselves working on the Information Desk, in the Business Centre, helping out in the Centre Shop, giving guided tours to groups of students, pensioners, new employees and so on.

On the Information Desk, our role is to serve the needs of the public in any way possible, dealing with enquiries with regards to future concerts, shows, exhibitions and so on, car park administration and basically acting as a central point of contact.

In the Business Centre the day consists of compiling a daily financial analysis report, stock control, assisting delegates with their I.T. packages for presentations, cash handling, receiving visitors and generally offering a whole range of business services.

WHAT ARE THE BEST BITS ABOUT IT?

Definitely meeting the diverse range of people that I come across each day as well as working within a supportive team and friendly work environment.

I also feel that the location of the ICC could not be better as we are close to the shopping area but also surrounded by the more tourist side of town and all the great bars and restaurants.

The job benefits are also superb with an excellent pensions scheme, medical facilities, sports facilities and even wearing a uniform is good as it saves time worrying about what to wear to work each day (and I never thought I would say that).

WHAT ARE THE LESS THAN NICE BITS ABOUT IT?
Probably the different shift patterns but this is only because I am not good at getting up in the mornings. It is not so bad in the summer but can be difficult in the winter when it is still dark.
IF YOU COULD DO SOMETHING ELSE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
I would actually like to pursue a career in media and my ultimate career ambition to become a news broadcaster / television presenter. I also enjoy writing and so would not mind developing this interest more too, especially with regards to the entertainment industry.
IF YOU WERE A CAREER ADVISER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SCHOOL LEAVERS TODAY?

Never give up on your aspirations and if you go through a bad patch and the situation looks bleak, just pick yourself back up and keep going because even when you stand still, the rest of the world will keep moving.

Never undersell yourself and gain as much work experience as possible as I find this is something that employers view this as invaluable, especially voluntary work.

Furthermore, try to do things that make you stand out from other potential candidates, no matter how daft it seems, to illustrate that you do have a life outside of academia.
