Paul Waight, a 33 year old Birmingham artist, will be showcasing some of his artwork on the new CD cover for Solar Flare, one of Birmingham’s exciting new bands.

Paul has been focusing on his art for the last five years, holding exhibitions, selling work and trying to make a living out of what he enjoys (see some of his art work below).

A musician by trade, Paul finds that there is a natural relationship between art and music: "My work is quite spiritual".

With his creative use of abstract shapes, vibrant shades and influence from dead musicians, the emotion of each piece is carried straight into the observer. This feeling is heightened by the use of music.

Paul’s first solo exhibition at the Custard Factory was as much about the art as it was about the atmosphere: " My friends, DJ’s Fang Shi, provided the music for the launch night. They played laid back jazz, which really incorporated into the art."

Paul spent a lot of money hiring props to add to the atmosphere, but luckily broke even when he sold some of his paintings.

The connection between music and art seems at the forefront for much of Paul’s work. One piece sees a collection of the great past jazz musicians all performing together.

Whilst the art is abstract, with triangles for faces, the emotion of such an occasion is not lost in the print.

"I wanted to capture the ultimate jam. I’m not sure if there is a connection between jazz music and art, but I’m certainly trying to make one."

This connection has now been continued with the correlation between Solar Flare and Paul’s art: "They asked me if they could use one of my images for their CD cover. I was really happy to let them. To make a living you have to promote yourself 100% and this was a really good opportunity to get my work noticed."
