An
artist is someone who from the moment they rise to a new dawn they
draw inspiration from all that surrounds them.
What
inspires me is the belief that as European Muslims we have to develop
our own identity and our own culture.

It's
what I'm best at...
Some
people are meant to be lawyers and advocate law; others are writers
and resort to producing rich literature, and others still are policemen
safeguarding our streets.
This
is what I am best at and what makes me feel most comfortable. I
have always been an artist though I have been in other employments.
I'm useless at anything else, honest!!

There's
always a sketch book in my bag...
A
lot of my work is paper based. I love graph paper but its not the
best paper in the world. I also love working with square-based paper.
I find paper is much more maligned a medium than canvas. It is also
a lot more accessible and easily available.
Although,
having said that I do look forward to moving onto metal sometime
in the near future. I try not to restrict myself to paper but I
always find myself drawn back to it! I carry it around with me;
there is always a sketch book in my bag. I am looking and learning
all the time.

A
visual diary of Ramadhan...
When
I was asked to participate in the Tranquil Minds exhibition, I actually
realised that it was one of those rare occasions that I would be
embarking on a body of work that would be set within certain boundaries.
I would be attempting to produce work within a theme that was at
once liberating and daunting in equal measure.
Discussions
with the show curator Taslim resulted in my committing to produce
a piece of work each day during the month of Ramadhan. It would
in effect be like compiling a visual diary of the month.

It's
all part of the journey...
At
the time of writing we have entered the final days- so far things
are on schedule. Its been a bit of an up and down month. Anyone
who has fasted the month of Ramadhan could perhaps identify with
that sentiment. It's all part of the journey.
The
pieces of work in themselves are not very large. I felt that in
order to complete the task I would not bite off more than I could
chew! I realised that there would have to be consistency as there
would be thirty pieces in the end.
For
me it has been an interesting exercise; it has meant working right
up to the exhibition. This is something I have not done before and
would not ordinarily recommend. It has been an intense but rewarding
experience.
