Ramadhan guidance
By Birmingham Central Mosque's 'The Dawn'
Muhammad Ali following Ramadhan guidance
Once again Allah (swt) has granted us the opportunity for seeking His blessings and forgiveness. Ramadhan is the month in which Allah's mercy pours like rain; it is up to us how we make ourselves worthy of it - (Iman Muhammad Ismail)

FACTS

Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

During Ramadhan, Muslims are expected to fast from dawn to sunset.

Muslims must not eat or drink during daylight hours. They must refrain from bad deeds and do good works.

The days of Ramadhan are a time of reflection. Muslims think about their attitude towards life and faith and their good and bad deeds.

The Prophet said:

"Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving ten times its lmes. Allah the Most High said, 'Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves of his desires and his food for me.

' For the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time of joy when he breaks his fast and the time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah then
the smell of musk."

Virtues of Ramadhan
During Ramadan the gates of ike, up to seven hundred tiparadise are opened and the gates of Hell Fire are locked.

In it sins are forgiven.

In it occurs Laylatul-Qadr (a night better than a thousand nights)

Fasting is a shield against Hell Fire and a cause for entering Paradise.

Suhoor
(The pre dawn - meal)
It is a blessed meal that should not be neglected.

Delay it as much as possible i.e. right until the time for Fajr begins.

The best form of Suhoor is
dates.

The intention for fasting is in the heart, no verbal intention is to be uttered.

While you are fasting…
Recite the Qur'an as much as possible and reflect upon its meanings.

Observe the five prayers properly at their times.

Increase in good actions such as charity.

Provide foods at the time for your brothers and sisters who are fasting.

Refrain from backbiting, lying and indecent speech

Iftar
Do not delay in breaking the fast once the sun has set.

It is preferable to break the fast with dates (or else with water)

It is a time when supplications are accepted.

The best supplications are that of the prophet (pbuh) he would say at the time of breaking his fast;

[Dahabadh dhama'u wab tallatil 'urooqu, wa thabatal ajru inshaallaah]

"The thirst has gone, the veins are moisturised and the reward is certain, if Allah wills."

Etiquette of eating
At the beginning of a meal say, Bismillaah ("In the name of Allah")

Eat with your right hand.

Eat that which is nearest to you.

Do not criticise the food.

Do not waste food or be extravagant.

Do not eat too much.

Any food left on ones finger should be licked.

On completion of a meal recite;

[Alhamdulillaahi-ladhee at'amanee haadhaa wa razaqaneehee min ghairi hawlin minnee wa la qowwah]

"All praise is for Allah, who has given me this (food to eat) and provided me without any effort or power on my part."
