In
year 10, every kid should get a chance to do work experience which
is completely different to what you do in school. When you first
hear about it you get excited and you have a lot of ideas on what
you would like to do and where you would like to work.

on placement at Birmingham Central Mosque |
My
work placement was chosen for me. It shocked me at first when I
heard that I was going to the Birmingham Central Mosque. My family
were quite surprised and also happy with the news.
During
the half-term holiday, I kept thinking about what sort of work the
people at the mosque would set for me to do.
Getting
to know everyone...
On
the first day of work experience I arrived at the mosque and I met
the caretaker, his name was Saeed. He helped me by telling me where
everything was and explained things religion-wise.

| Mohammad
Ali - mosque office manager |
On
the second day I met Adam Yoséf. He explained to me what
I would be doing for two weeks and also what is currently happening
in the Mosque. Alongside Adam I met more people including Mohammad
Ali, who is in charge of the office and Khalifah, who is a student,
works in the mosque as a janitor.
Later
in the week, I was introduced to Dr. M. Naseem who is the chairman
of the mosque. He is very famous as was in a lot of the press clippings
that I had to look through to find out about the mosque's work.
Helping
out...
The
local police officer PC Tony Fisher came to the mosque a few times
and visited with another officer on Friday to help in the mosque.

reading the Dawn newsletter |
On
the 10th June were the local elections. The mosque was very quiet
as a lot of staff were out voting or helping. I have been helping
with the July edition of The Dawn, for which I am typing up some
of the articles and contributing some pictures and artwork.
I have
also been helping with displays, tidying, computer work, taking
pictures, working with the media, assisting visitors to the mosque
and the general public and answering the phone a lot. I also helped
assist children who have been visiting the mosque; they get a lot
of visitors here.
I've
had lots of fun ...
Over
the week I have learned to use new machines like a photocopier,
fax machine and others. In the mosque I have had a lot of fun with
everyone and I have to thank Adam Yoséf for helping me feel
comfortable with the atmosphere of the mosque. I wish I could stay
here longer as I don't want to go back to school so quickly.
I have
yet to see Birmingham from the top of the minaret. I think that
my work experience has been a lot more exciting than the other students
from my school.
