Radio
Ramadhan is an exciting new initiative, which I am glad to be a
part of. Born from the aspirations of British Muslims, who wanted
to make full use of media to serve the community as well as to promote
the peaceful message of Islam to the wider community.
The
team wanted people to understand Islam, that it respects the rights
of fellow human beings, that Muslims can and do work as effective
members of the community aspiring for the betterment of the society,
thus combating the negative portrayal of a few minority Muslim extremists.
They
also wished for non-Muslims to get some first hand experience of
the religion, its moral, social and family values rather than obtaining
the information from secondary sources.

and Zoha learning the ropes at Radio Ramadhan |
Radio
Ramadhan Dudley and Radio Ramadhan Walsall (our neighboring Ramadhan
station) take people from all sections of the community, male and
female, but particularly fledgling students, who may or may not
be studying media and gives them real life training, putting theory
into practice.
It
is always a pleasure to see a student who has no concept of the
workings behind a radio station to become fully attuned to the ins
and outs of radio work.
The
community as a whole greatly appreciates the radio particularly
due to the fact that all the people working for the radio, whether
presenters or organizers, are volunteers charging nothing for their
invaluable time, effort and energy.

Muslim
women tend to be modest when it comes to presenting themselves publicly
but Radio Ramadhan has provided them with an opportunity to express
their views and raise issues that concern them most as well as being
active participants in wider community matters. This can be attributed
to the comfortable and anonymous aspect of the radio.
I have
learnt a great deal from Radio Ramadhan. I was, as most people are,
unaware of how a radio station works, but now I feel confident enough
to say that I could start my own.
As
a voluntary organisation, we have a flexible command structure.
This has allowed me to take part in advertising, marketing, training,
fundraising and even a little managing as well as what I originally
signed up for - presenting.

All
these tasks have increased my networking skills, as well as liaising
and basically acting in a professional business manner. Sometimes
trying to sell adverting packages over the phone to a customer can
seem surreal.
Is
it really me a seventeen year old, who is acting like this businessman?
Will they take me seriously? So far they have, and I thank Radio
Ramadhan Dudley for giving me the opportunity to do so.
By
creating greater awareness and understanding of Islam we have created
stronger community links. Our radio is always the talking point
of Ramadhan by both Muslims and non-Muslims; we stimulate conversation
on our religion as well as current affairs pertinent to the day.
It
brings a sense of community especially to those people who are unable
to participate with the wider community through perhaps a barrier
of language or culture; this station is a stepping stone to bridging
this gap of culture and language by encouraging the attainment of
education and exposing the wider community in small doses, for instance
giving advice on health matters using both English and Urdu.
