Young Disciples scoop cash award

Birmingham organisation Young Disciples were among seven winners from across the UK to recieve a cash award that will help them continue their work with socially excluded young people in the city.

Lozells based organisation Young Disciples are one of seven organisations from across the UK that won cash awards totaling £70,000 from an UK organisation called Centre for Social Justice .

They have been honoured for their pioneering work in helping young people caught up in gangs and street crime in the inner city areas of Birmingham.

Working hard to fix a broken society

Centre for Social Justice was set up by former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith to recognise the work of some of Britain’s many exceptional charities, voluntary and faith-based organisations; that are working hard in some of the  country’s most disadvantaged communities.

Young people involved at Young Disciples

Young Disciples were one of seven winning organisations picked out of 400 nominations from across the country. The awards were presented at a prestigious ceremony attended by political figures, anti-poverty campaigners and celebrities.

Young singers from Young Disciples entertained guests on the evening by performing their song ‘Life’.

Life in Lozells

Young Disciples were established in 2001 and work mainly in the Lozells, Aston, Handsworth and Newtown areas of Birmingham.

Making music at Young Disciples

Sports, drama, group activities and music are the key methods Young Disciples use to engage with young people who are involved or at risk of becoming involved in anti-social activities or gang life.

The song ‘Life’ was written and produced by young people who attend Young Disciples; the lyrics reflect on real life issues that affect their daily lives.
