The 26 year old has been playing guitar for a long time.

"In the first place I was self taught but after a few years of frustration I had numerous lessons," he said on BBC WM Introducing.

"I was always taught electrically; I never really took up the acoustic guitar. I'd pick it up infrequently and have another go."

Every artist has their own story about how they got started on the live circuit; Alex has a slightly different one though.

"It all started as a joke in all honesty. I wrote song for a friend who's girlfriend was a bit 'promiscuous' at the time, shall we say. He went through a bad time over it so I wrote it a gave it to him to cheer him up.

"Well some of our friends got hold of it and put it on myspace and word got out. So I started gigging and so forth. I've probably been gigging for about eight months."

Alex's favourite night is Bohemian Jukebox, the monthly acoustic gig at The Victoria in Birmingham.

"It's always a good one," he says. "I've played a lot of gigs at a lot of venues but Bohemian Jukebox has so far been the better one. It's at The Victoria but also now at the Hare & Hounds. I fit into it more. With usual nights you can be slotted in between two bands and it doesn't always fit in. The deal with the Jukebox is that people are there for that kind of music."

Alex writes songs on personal experiences - he fully admits that 'Miss You Like A Train' is based on "spending the majority of my life missing most things - appointments, opportunities, trains and so forth".

Ironically, given the gentle blend of acoustic folk he produces, Alex sites Axl Rose as a hero - "I've always been a fan; can't deny it. The ginger locks, the lycra. Me and my brother grew up on that stuff."

In typically modest fashion though, he insists there is no grand plan:

"I'm writing more material and have some gigs planned further out of the West Midlands. There is a television thing on the horizon but I can't say anymore because I don't have any details. The future's bright but there's no real ambition to it - I just enjoy the pleasure of getting up and playing gigs and I thank everyone for that."
