Sing Birmingham

Birmingham joins other cities around the UK in marking the handover of the Olympic torch with a group sing-a-long on Saturday 24th August 2008.

As the torch is passed from Beijing to London, community choirs will lead mass sing-a-longs at city centres and big screens across the country.

It's part of the national 'Sing The Nation' campaign where regional choirs will lead 15 minutes of collective singing in each of the locations.

Every city will have three songs: a simple choice to get everyone warmed up; a song of regional significance chosen by the choirs and based on regional relevance and a national song which is being arranged by National Youth Choirs which will contain snippets of the familiar and the traditional.

Birmingham's celebrations will take place in Victoria Square where a new big screen will be fitted. Our second, regional song will be a rendition of Birmingham band UB40's cover 'Red Red Wine'.

Whilst the event is choir-led, 'Sing The Nation' are keen to point out that they won't be simply choir performances and you are encouraged to pop along and join in too.
