Digbeth revamp begins

Work has begun on the £15 million renovation of Digbeth coach station. Check out these pictures of what the site will look like and have your say!

Construction began in November 2008 following the February announcement that planning permission had been approved.

National Express is wholly funding the new £15m coach station which could be open as early as Christmas 2009.

Original plans for an iconic futuristic design were scrapped in favour of a new structure that incorporates the existing frontages of Digbeth High Street.

Stuart Parker, of National Express, said: "One of the issues with the original designs was that it was an iconic structure rather than a functional station and as a company we made a decision to give Birmingham a coach station immediately.

"The new designs aren't the same as the original iconic glazed structure, but that wasn't buildable. I think in this economic climate, it was a decision well made."

The new building remains in the same location immediately adjacent to Digbeth High Street, although coaches will enter via a new entrance in Bradford Street.

Until the new coach station is open, a temporary coach station known as 'Birmingham Central' is operating. This is situated on Oxford Street at the former Volkswagen showroom.

The new building will provide:

*A double height, illuminated and fully glazed enclosed concourse with modern passenger information displays and dedicated seating for each waiting bay
*A temperature controlled waiting area providing additional comfort for passengers waiting over longer periods
*An information centre providing up to the minute travel information and ticketing
*An open plan cafe providing contemporary food and drink
*New toilet facilities
*A new retail facility facing onto Digbeth Hight Street
*Additional office accommodation
*A short stay customer car park with 15 spaces
*A meet and greet drop off zone
*A dedicated taxi waiting zone
*16 coach bays (and four layover bays for potential growth)

Have Your Say

The structure has no Hat, topping or end point. It reminds me of a tree deprived of it's branches. & why the canopy ceases to be a canopy guarding passengers from inclement weather is highly architecturally & in reality impractical & shows insensibility for the clients.

Paul
Second city - second rate bus station. Bland and dull. Well done Brum, you never let us down.

wilf
For the second city to only have 16 bays for coaches, when many other revamped towns, have many more, is just madness, & yes, a vital sprinter bus system needs to be incorporated for it to work effectively, otherwise, it will be out of date before it is built.

Rob
It is still too far away from other forms of public transport. How does National Express think all its passengers get home? Currently people struggle up hill with luggage to bus stops or railway stations - or are forced to pay for a taxi. It is this extra cost, time and effort that puts people off using public transport. Perhaps when they redevelop New Street station, they could include a bus and coach interchange and coaches could stop there on the way to Digbeth. Birmingham needs an intergrated transport network that gets people out of the city quickly and cheaply. The Council and Centro should to start including transport improvements such as Metro routes, better intergration between bus and rail etc, in their city planning.

Great News! Love the new design. It's about time it's been brought into the 21st C. It holds alot of memories but was slightly depressing.

Brian Slamo
After taking photo's in & out of Digbeth. for the last 30 years. This project looks fantastic.

Karen Stanley
About time too! Digbeth as a whole needs serious regeneration, the area is neglected and badly run down - the existing coach station is like entering a black hole from which you may, or may not, escape......

Jo Oughton
I agree that the old building needs to go but this is just revamping the old which is really a waste of time should be bulldozed and a complete new one built.

belinda
it looks very stylish indeed,,, very nice

Shaun Temple
This is an occasion, which i intend to document over the next two years as i see it will be at the forefront of the new Digbeth Regeneration programme which will bring Digbeth into line with the current forward thinking of Birmingham City Council to take us out of THE CONCRETE JUNGLE as mentioned by the prince of wales.

gillian Warren
Good-but let us know exactly where to catch coaches until it's finished.I don't know where the volkswagon building is!

Gill Warren
At last. The present coach station is so awful and dismal.Hopefully the new one will be in paler colours, airy and light

Lynn T
It definitely needs doing, the current station is awful. But, just like the Bullring, all that money is spent on one or two buildings that stick out like a sore thumb in the centre of a city whose outer residential areas are left to rot

Tim Pryce
What Birmingham really needs is an out-of-town transportation hub, close to the airport and incorporating a combined terminal serving national rail and coach services, with a fast metro link into the city centre. As this would also be close to the M42/M6, a huge park & ride centre here would also help keep traffic volumes into town to a manageable level.

Ry, brum
That'll be brilliant when its done! Great news for birmingham at last, shame its got nothing to do with the government though! well is uppose if it did, it would take 3 years to decide if it's feasible then another 20 to build it!We just need the ok on new street now 'n' we'll be sweet.

George Riley
I am very sad that this project has not included a BUS STATION! Birmingham's bus system is miles behind other cities and towns. This is another opportunity to radically and completely change the transport systems in Birmingham missed.

Adrian
So, which genius was it that thought that in these days where metal theft is on the increase that it was a good idea to cover a building in not the nicest of areas in a metal with one of the highest scrap values?

jhon adams
at last birmingham is making a great move in its new developments plan. well done done birmingham and continue the great success

Mate
I think it's alroit mate!

Moin
I agree with Geoff's comment. The Make plan looked spectacular as oppossed to this average design. At least it will be better than the current building.

Wayne.H
About time we had a 21st century coach station. For a second city, with super loos, etc, etc.

Chris Dudley
It looks okay, it's just boring! Next to Selfridges they could have something much more exciting! About time though - they've needed to knock the current horrid building down for about two decades!Just please give us something more challenging and original

Daniel, birmingham
About time the worst coach station in the country got a revamp. Considering its such a huge city i am suprised it took this long

Eileen Miles
Not enough short stay parking spaces. If a couch is delayed and people are waiting to collect passengers an overlap will take place .

Anne-Marie
A great improvement, hope it does not take to long to do.

Gary Woolton
There is something quaint about the current Digbeth Coach Station, I remember my first visit there when I first moved up here, but it does need a revamp especially as National Express is a Birmingham Based company.

william asquith
Not convinced that this is for the long term. Is this the standard of architecture we want to use to welcome visitors to our great city. The temporary building quality and appearance is much more impressive. Why can't the council and National Express (one of the worlds most profitable travel companys) get a more befiting building as a steping stone to the great work done in the bullring

Matt.B
Thank god, its needed knocking down for years!New station looks ace!

Jon Gould
Brilliant.Another space age looking pile of glass and steel in the middle of a 1960's development.Because that won't look as stupid as the Bull Ring does....
