Theatre and Dance

Lila McConigley and John Barrowman
Princess Yasmin and Aladdin

John Barrowman unveiled

By Jill Ella, BBC
Most people are thinking about summer holidays, but the Birmingham Hippodrome is looking ahead to its Christmas panto. They've just announced the star of Aladdin will be John Barrowman.

John Barrowman, aka Captain Jack in the smash-hit Torchwood, is to star in Birmingham Hippodrome's pantomime Aladdin.

He took a break from his busy schedule - he's a pretty popular guy at the moment, to come to Birmingham to promote the panto.

He's currently a judge on the programme 'Any Dream Will Do', he's filming a new series of 'Torchwood', and when we met him, he'd just been flying with the RAF!

Jenny Jones from BBC WM had a chat with John.

She even managed a quick kiss at the end - well, as she says - it was probably her only chance ever, so she just 'went for it'.

Naughty but nice

John says he's looking forward to playing Aladdin and he certainly seems keen to engage with the audience, as well as having a bit of fun.

When talking about the special effects in the show he said: "There will be a 3D genie that the audience can rub - I wish I was in 3D."

And then went on to say with a smile: " I can get a little naughty".

As he'll be spending Christmas in Birmingham, he invited people to say hello if they see him around: "...especially if it's in a bar and the want to buy me a drink!"

Also appearing in Aladdin will be Birmingham’s very own Don Maclean as Widow Twankey and the Grumbleweeds as The Chinese Policemen.

Masashi Fujimoto from the BBC sitcom Roman’s Empire will be The Emperor, with Peter Gallagher as the evil Abanazar and the beautiful Lila McConigley as Princess Yasmin.

Aladdin will also feature a special appearance by the Daleks, making their pantomime debut, as well as amazing special effects.

Aladdin will be running at the Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday 19th December 2007 to Sunday 27th January 2008. And believe me - it will come around sooner than you think!
