Jodi and Andrew
Translating a film script - in Moseley

Cannes here we come

By Jodi Tommerdahl
When you help out a friend by translating their film script, you never think you're going to end up on the red carpet in Cannes - but that's what happened for Jodi and Andrew from Moseley.

We’re just a couple living in Moseley, not usually involved with the world of show business, but soon we’ll be walking down the famous red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in France!

Andrew grew up in Paris because of his father’s job. One of his childhood friends, Marc-Antoine Robert, worked for French TV and decided to go into business as a movie producer.

His very first project was to produce the film "Persepolis", which was already a well-established political comic.

While working on a shoestring budget, Marc-Antoine was asked to deliver a version of the script in English for producers in the US, and quick!

"I need a translator - and quick!"

He naturally thought of his friends, Andrew (bilingual since birth) and me - Andrew’s wife (I also lived in France for several years).

We did the translating job in our home in Moseley over two hectic weekends and some very long evenings in between.

It was a far cry from our usual jobs. Andrew is a civil engineer and I'm a lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham.

During a recent trip to Paris, we visited the studio where the film was being made.

Andrew was amazed to see the enthusiasm of everyone working on this project and found it quite inspiring.

Now the payoff for all of our hard work is at hand!

Persepolis is being shown at Cannes. We never dreamed it would go this far (although we're hoping that it wins) and just couldn’t believe it when Marc-Antoine told us that we would be walking up the red carpet too.

The first thing we did was to get plane tickets, but our attention (especially mine) quickly turned to the question of what to wear.  I've been out and bought THE dress.

It might be over the top for a translator, but I figure this is my only chance to walk a red carpet with the stars and I’m going to make the most of it!

We know very little about what to expect during the two days we’ll be there.

We know that we’ll attend the film’s screening on 23rd May and will then attend a dinner and party in honour of the film. Besides that, we’re just hoping to get a good look at what’s going on.

We'll be doing a blog to let you know how we get on and who we spot!

Jodi and Andre are now back from Cannes - see how they got on.
