Five libraries across Yardley have been working with local schools to raise the profile of reading and library use in the local area. At each school 20 junior Library Champions are recruited from year 4 or 5. The libraries are not necessarily looking for high flyers or academically gifted children, they just need to show an enthusiasm for reading. The champions attend 3 training sessions and sign a pledge to act as ambassador for their local library and are given sweatshirts and badges to show they have been chosen. Training to be a champion

The training includes awareness on the role of libraries, an understanding of book selection and practical experience of library procedures. They are then invited to attend a monthly club to take part in suggesting new books to buy and look at ideas for fun library based activities. Encouraging others to read The scheme is about getting the young children to spread the news around their school and friends about the new books and activities in their local libraries.

Young champions at Yardley Library explained: “ Some children might like to read adventure stories and others might like fairy tales. We get some money from our library to buy the books children want to read." The children gain confidence and leadership skills as a result of their experience.
