Being young in Acocks Green

Young People in Acocks Green have produced a film exploring the root of why young people in the area are feeling excluded.

With the help of community film maker Rachel Smith, the group of young people from the Fox Hollies Youth Forum met with their local councillor and police as part of the project looking at the issues in the area.

"We need more facilities for the young people..."

The film they produced was also shown to local residents and statutory organisations.

Amy explained: “We did this project to get our point across about getting more facilities for the local area so we’re not just standing on the streets.

"There are gangs of kids standing around messing about because there’s nothing to do.

"We think if we had more activities and places to go there would be less graffiti and the area would look a lot more presentable."

Others in the group explained: "There’s graffiti everywhere and the shop keepers moan if we stand too close to the shops.

"We don’t feel safe around our own area and the youth clubs don’t stay open long enough."

Find out how the young people got on with their project.
