Street Ice 2006/2007

Get your skates on! For the second year running (er, skating?), Birmingham city centre can boast of an outdoor ice rink. It's open until the 14th of January 2007.

Street Ice will not be returning Christmas 2008. Click the link above to read the story.

This page refers to Street Ice 2 (opened November 2006).

Following the success of last year's Street Ice, Birmingham City Council and its sponsors have joined forces once more to open an ice rink in Birmingham city centre.

The glistening 1000m2 outdoor rink in Centenary Square is encircled by twinkling lights and fluttering flags. Skating marshals are on hand to offer help and advice.

It is possible to escape from the cold and the physical exertion. The rink-side Winter Lounge is open all day and serves warming drinks and wintry specialties.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, 'Ice Sessions' take over the rink - DJs play music for the skaters and the loungers.

Last year's Street Ice was very popular. We received many comments about it, including;

Tim Borley: "this place ROCKS WITH GREATNESS".

Dave 'the rave' Chesterman: "this ice rink is so cool man. Never before have I had such a captive crowd watching my moves. I am certainly a fan of this."

Codie: "I think the rink should stay coz it was really fun. And it would be even more funner in the summer."

Jo Tibbetts: "I took my daughter Ellie-May aged 6, we arrived at 10am and were the only people on the ice for 2 hours. There is a wonderful ice marshall who taught me and my daughter to skate, it is a day my daughter and i will never forget."

Madge Nickless: "Wonderful, I'm 60 years old and I skated for the first time in 25 years. It took me back to my youth. Yes, I still can skate."

There were only five of us on the ice at first which made us feel a little silly but within minutes the ice filled up and we all had such a great time. We were on the ice during rush hour on broad street and as twilght brought a welcoming disco light to the music. Every one skater or novice would also have a great time!!!

Nicole Dixon
Its something 4 every1 2 enjoy of all ages I went last year 4 my birthday and loved it and was sooooooooo excited when I found out it was back again this year. Im going on Sat (16th) CANT WAIT. Brian Pardew is right, its something to do, to entertain people, instead of the million and 1 shops and restaurants brum has to offer, there isnt really alot to do if u want some leisure activity bar going to the gym, which isnt every1s cup of tea lol it certainly isnt mine hehe. But having the ice rink here is probably 1 of the best ideas the council hav had 4 brum lol!!!!!!

daz
we need a permanent ice rink, the old one was brill, come on council ppl get ya act together.
