Bham MP makes spoof Cameron video

A Birmingham Labour MP has defended publishing an online video taking the mickey out of Tory leader David Cameron's 'WebCameron' web blog.

Appearing on the hosting site YouTube wearing a baseball cap and T-shirt Erdington Labour MP Sion Simon mimics the Conservative leader and offers to give his children away, and invites viewers to sleep with his wife.

He says: "Yo. My name's Dave, yeah? Thing is, I'm just like you. I've got the same worries, the same troubles, the same cares, the same trouble and strife.

"Want to sleep with my wife? That's cool. Come down, check it out, we'll sort it out. Safe."

He adds: "I've got two kids - kid one, kid two. You like them? Take one - that's cool."

Tories have blasted it as 'offensive'  - but Sion Simon says people shouldn't take it too seriously.

Satire

Mr Simon said: "This is satire. It's funny. It's not the slightest bit offensive. If David Cameron thinks it's offensive, and asks me to take it down, then I'll do so immediately. But all these usual tory suspects who want to get into the newspapers, will be taken with the seriousness they deserve."

"Cameron is just about saying what he thinks people want to hear all of the time. This webcameron business is patronising and shallow. Either mean it or don't do it."

The video is a send-up of the Tory leader's WebCameron project, for which he has been filmed talking in his kitchen while doing the washing-up.

Highly offensive

Peter Luff, Tory MP for Mid Worcestershire, said: "When you go over the top like this, you bring all of us in politics into disrepute.

"Anyone in politics is fair game. But this goes beyond what is acceptable and Sion should be thoroughly ashamed of himself.  "He should get it taken down. It's his wife and children. I just can't believe that a fellow MP would stoop so low. It's highly offensive."

Video removed

On 13th October 2006 Sion Simon removed the spoof internet video after his send-up of the Conservative leader David Cameron sparked a row in Westminster.

yes he as over steped the mark of common decency no wonder no one has any respct for authority.

Carl
It's not very good or funny, but pretty inoffensive. However it does show up the Cameron marketing ploy and is possibly a contemporary reflection of the current dire state of UK politics. Has no one got any positive policies to get us out of the mess in which we're wallowing?

Simon Jerram
Sion Simon is not the only one to spoof, the eminately spoofable WebCameron, however from the script exerpts it does seem to be the least funny. Frankly the idea that MPs shouldn't have a little fun in their spare time, as suggested by some, is a little sad though.

Patrick Richardson
This is not satire,it is disgusting filth, the police need to go and examine this persons computor, there is definitely something wrong with him.

Jay
hahah... brilliant. Lighten up you lot. It's not everyday we see politicans doing this sort of thing. I don't mind it, just as long as he doesn't mock someone who isn't a complete idiot.

Dave
If Mr Simon say's there is nothing wrong with this, the why has he now removed the Video from YouTube? I think he realises that he has made himslf look childish and cheapend his own image.

steve c
labour want to pay more attention to what the country wants, typical the labour goon show is still on the road

jason hill
as i understand things, when someone feels they have to resort to childish insults in a plea to blacken the reputation of an opponent, this is generally indicative of that person having little valuable contribution to make himself. it's far easier to attack something or someone than it is to put forward something of substance, and to be totally honest this is simply a continuation of labour's petty approach to winning votes - let's knock the torys and all will be fine...the sad thing is this worked at the last election...

Patrick Graham
I think Simon should be patted on the back for daring to be different. All those people demanding an apology need to get a life. Frankly, Sion is a grown man and is probably capable of working out what is, or is not the 'right' thing to do. The video itself could have been a lot better, but webcameron is ripe for ridicule.

David Tozer
There is surely a "Code of Conduct" for MP'S to maintain. This has been breached by this dishonourable MP,who is quite clearly unfit to represent his constituancy. The minimum action should be a suspension, the ideal action would be dismissal. However this government appear to whitewash any bad behaviour irrespective of serious nature of the charges. New Labour has allowed standards to deteriate to the lowest degree.

Dear Nick Just so the Right Honourable Sion Simon fully understands the words that come from his mouth; Satirical - given to the use of satire Satire - in which topical issues are held up to scorn by means of ridicule Scorn - open contempt for a person or thing Ridicule - language or behaviour intended to humiliate or mock Definitions as in the Collins Concise Dictionary So yes I think that bloke is offensive, don't you. May be next time he should understand what he is saying. Nick you rock! Jo from Solihull

Sion Simon 4 prime minister!
well done Sion, it's about time someone in Politics did something funny!

Andy Lowe
Nick (Owen), I saw the interview with Sion Simon at lunchtime today, and I have to say I think the whole thing's a total over-reaction. I've watched the video-blog via the BBC website (not sure if this is the entire clip), and really can't find anything "offensive" about the clip at all. One may question the MP's judgement and degree of professionalism, but you can see and hear far worse than this on pre-watershed TV and Radio - I suggest you may want to tune in to a certain Mr Chris Moyles on Radio 1 to hear what real "offence" sounds like on air! The worse thing's that's said on the clip is "you want to sleep with my wife? That's OK". I personally don't find that remark - in the context of a light-hearted gimmick - offensive. Have you, and the rest of the Midlands Today team, lost your sense of humour???

Dazza
Mr Simon is actually a very sad individual. He says this is "funny". It isn't. Not in the slightest. He needs to go into a darkened room and lie down for a bit.

Peter
I agree with sion,it,s only a bit of fun, keep the torries out of goverment, they made enough mess mess last time, leave labour in P.W.Thatcher

M
I live in Erdington and I think the video is funny, but maybe inappropriate for this to be done by a MP. Mr Simon has lost respect and votes. it would be interesting to hear his thought process on making the video and what he hoped would be achieved

L. Carroll
Dear God. Does nobody get the point. Simon may be a fool, but Cameron deserves lampooning for his ludicrous and frankly rather offensive attempts to be "one of us" via his insane webcam shenanigans. Does Cameron have no shame using his children to further his own career ends? I suppose not - he is after all a celebrity and they have no idea of normal, decent behaviour. Cameron has already sold out his children by letting the world into his home and parading his children as extras in this hideous spectacle. If Simon is offensive, then Cameron's act is doubly so.

Zeth
I'm a Birmingham student and I found the video hilarious. If it was David Brent doing this then no one would mind. I'm not a Labour voter but I thought it made a good point. David Cameron's dragging his children into the public eye is a bit weird, that video uses comedy to point that out. Having a pretty wife and 2.4 children does not replace real policies or ideas. People are being puritanical and old fashioned, the fact that you are covering this shows BBC iss scared of MPs communicating directly with the public because it is addicted to the licence tax (highway robbery).

Steve
What an embarrassment. What a total plonker. I pity the people of Erdington who have him as their MP.

Viv Govier
Just shows the type that are voted in to office. He would do better using his head as a mop !!!

Joe Innes
I think Sion Simon's making a point... I don't think it is intended to be purely funny. There are supposed to be comedic elements, and I have to admit, in places, I giggled, but I think the main point is that David Cameron should not pretend to be someone he isn't for the sake of votes.

P.Frog
I'm sure the people who elected this MP are pleased that he's reacting to all their local/national concerns in such a mature, considered manner. Far from inviting the community to take more interest in politics this surely enhances the view that many politicians don't deserve the respect of the nation. I'm sure we can all form our own mature opinions on David Camerons activities and don't need immature stunts like this to help us. Far from identifying with his constituents and the public Sion Simon has just made us query his ability to seriously discuss issues which concern us all.

Bilal
Not remotely funny - he should try finding the definition of "funny".

A.E. Farley
This man has got the time to talk such disparaging tripe but obviously not the intelligence to know the difference between comedy and sheer rubbish.

Kath Terry
Does this man realise he is neither intelligent nor witty. He has his head in the sand if he thinks the electorate want their taxes used to pay his salary to make this video. It's time he got a proper job and learned how to work instead of acing out the facade which British politics has become. It's about time a few more politicians grew up and stopped treating the electorate like ignorant morons - those of us with intelligence pursue careers with purpose instead of behaving like schoolkids. Thank goodness I don't live in Erdington and that my MP behaves in a mature and responsible fashion
