Speedway returns to Perry Barr in 2007

Brummie Speedway returns

By Tony Wilson, site user
September 28th 2006. Twenty years and two days after the last speedway meeting in the City, Birmingham City Council finally granted approval for the return of the sport to the Brummies' spiritual home, Perry Barr.

The day that fans of this great family sport have been dreaming of since the final meeting at Bordesley Green in 1986, didn't come with a fanfare, more of a barrage of emails and phone calls as supporters found out the news one by one.

Two weeks earlier, a merry band of around 30 fans had packed into the planning committee meeting, half expecting the councillors to again throw out promoter Tony Mole's application, only to be bemused by the announcement of a deferral of the decision pending on agreement to certain conditions being met by Mr Mole.

Delighted

To say us supporters were in a state of flux would be about right, on one hand we were all delighted that at least it looked like the council would rubber stamp the Brummies' return, on the other we all knew that we only had until the end of October for the committee to complete the process so that Tony would be able to enter the team into the Premier League next year.

But, the rest is now history and we can all concentrate our attention on the hard task ahead. There will be work needed on the stadium, a track will have to be constructed, a stand has to be erected and a myriad of other items to make the venue suitable for speedway racing, have to be completed. Then there is the small matter of the team.

The 'B' team

Speculation has begun already over which seven very lucky riders will wear the famous red "B" on yellow in 2007, but no matter who these guys are, they can be assured of the support of the many fans the club will no doubt attract. We have waited a very long time for this and we have 20 years of frustration to let out, in a positive way of course and what better way than getting behind your team.

Time, I feel, for some thank you's. The biggest thanks of all must go to Tony Mole, for having the determination to see this through when sometimes he must have wondered whether it was all worth it after one delay followed another.

Also to the man who has spent the last 20 years writing letters and emails, making phone calls, attending meetings and ploughing through pile upon pile of paperwork all in the hope that his beloved speedway team would again race in this great city. That man is Brian Buck.

Ta very much

Gentlemen, we can't thank you enough. Thanks too must go the BCC planning committee for their sterling work in pushing the approval through so quickly. Also to our friends in the world of speedway, from former riders in Australia, to our fellow fans in Britain, your support has been a great help to us. So to anyone who has sent a letter or email or made a phone call on behalf of our cause, a great big Brummie "ta very much" to all of you.

Roll on March '07.

Best news ever!! I was a Brummies fan during the 70s and 80s. Tried supporting Coventry when they closed but it just wasn't the same. Can't wait to see the red and yellow 'B' again. Memories come flooding back of my childhood hero 'big' Arthur Browning. Also Jan Gravningen, Hans Nielsen, Ari Koponen, Soren Sjosten, the Grahame brothers. Great times!!

Dave Hopkins
SO excited. The Brummies are back. Grew up at Perry Barr then Bordesley Green. Worked the track as soon as I was old enough. ALL time Favourite. Well 2 come to my mind the great Phil Herne. Who I believe has a son Lee racing now and also the not so great Stuart Mountfield. Those where the days. My Mum and the rest of us got very close to Paul Thorpe and his familly aswell. Great Memories. Cant Wait to start again.

Kate Lees
This is excellent news, it's about time speedway was brought back to birmingham

Tony Pearsall
Yes yes yes bring it on cant wait

lesley weate
i was a brumie suporter from 1970 and never missed one match till they shut down, i'v watched wolverhamton for a few years but always hoped the brumies would be back GREAT NEWS.

David Avey
Yes, it has been away from Birmingham for far too long, I attended speedway with my father in perry bar years ago, I am now 58 years old and looking forward to this very much. My grand sons will be attending with me as well, I have been going to Wolverhampton just to stay with the sport. But I do have one major issue, why in heavens name have we got to go to Telford to pick up tickets for Birmingham speedway, what about those that cannot get there, do we have to miss the first meeting because of this. Please reply if there is another way to get tickets?

Paula Bowen
Great news about speedway coming back to brum, used to be a cradley fan along with my dad, when that came to an end we went to wolverhampton, sadly dad passed away now, but i will be there to see this new team and track, cant wait

di slater
this is really great news, have been waiting so long for this to happen,we thought it would never happen!

stephen broadhurst
it's great news

Gren Gaskell
Congratulations it is good news for all speedway fans but when can we expect a venue nearer Malvern?

David Horner
It's fantastic to hear of a new track opening in Birmingham. I have been a speedway fan for 56yrs and it's a great family sport. We've seen too many tracks close over the years including my own at Halifax & Bradford, so good luck to the Brummies in 2007 and many years to come.

David Lomas
In reply to a question from David Swain; Arne Pander is still very much alive and living in Wymondham in Norfolk. Arne is quite frail now, and has recently been in hospital. He was the mainstay of the Oxford team for many years, and was a superb rider in his time. Great news to see that Birmingham will be meeting my team, Kings Lynn during 2007.

Glynnis Sutton
Wecome back Birmingham! Let's now get Leicester back as well ! It will make the BEES look to their laurels in the future ! The more the merrier eh?

Bernard Powell
that Alan Hunt memorial meeting is going to quite an event. I hope we can all get in people will travel for miles to see this.Eve must be getting on now

phil innamorati
great 2 see the Bees returning home. Used to go as a boy in the 80's. Went to school at KEGS Aston & we used to get tickets from the reception at the BRMB Studios in our lunch hour (think we had to name 4 of the current riders to qualify!). Good Luck to the Bees & Welcome home. Great news, especially after loosing the Heathens ground a few years ago. Phil PS: To the Detractors... As someone who regularly drives/rides past the UCE/One Stop...I find it highly amusing that you're complaining about noise levels! Especially, as the Dog Track is in such a quiet location, surrounded by residential property...Not! The return of the Bees can only be good news as it will once again raise the profile of Perry Barr!

Harvey Nutter
As a speedway fan since 1972 I am very glad that another team or venue has been opened after watching venues close on a regular basis over the last 20 years or so.Good luck to the Brummies and especially Tony Mole for persistancy.

roddy
I really do not see how anyone can object to this especially as the stadium is already there and used for dog racing. Objections re noise etc are in my opinion based on a complete lack of understanding of what actually goes on at speedway.

steve clive
carnt belive its true like so many fans out there its a great xmas present to us all bring it on steve .

W.SHIRRA
BRILL BRUMS , GLAD 2 HAVE YOU BACK.

Owen Pearson
Of course it's a good thing. As you know speedway is a family sport where no crowd segregation required. The admission is cheap compared to say football. Very few meetings require Police attendance. Fans do not chant or sing obsence songs - banter between most opposing fans being more based on humour. Having said that on track every rider is out to win, and racing is fact and furious! No favours asked or given out there! If you have never seen live speedway, get to your nearest track next March. Unfortunately, if you live in Leicester you will have a long way to travel. Perhaps Leicester City Council could speak to Birmingham City Council to see a way forward to revive Leicester Speedway.

David Swain
Thanks, very much Brian for restoring this family sport to Birmingham. Your tenacity and enduring endeavour, is something to behold, when others want "instant results." Yourself, Tony Mole, graham Drury, etc., deserve to succeed and we, the fans, are indebted to you all. The meeting last week being well attended I am contacting all my old speedway mates and new ones to enthuse and encourage them to come along to see "The Brubmmies," Wednesday, 21st March, 2007. Can you tell me if i am right when reflecting on a former star, Arne Pander, the Dane? Am I correct in believing that he was killed in a car racing accident? David Swain

Brilliant!

Mark Knowles
Great news. Now how about getting the odd Stock Car meeting there as well - it would give Birmingham TWO venues for the UK's premier (4-wheel!) oval motorsport.

Judy Stambouly
I can' believe it !! I was 6 weeks old when I went to my first speedway meeting at the old Alexander Stadium, indeed I was the Brummie mascot after that. I've prayed for this for many years. My 2 grandsons love it, having been introduced to speedway at the home of the Somerset Rebels, whilst on holiday. Just wished my Mom & Dad were still alive to see it. They were heartbroken when the Brummies ceased to exist. It was there one and only night out.We traveled the lenght and breadth of the uk in the Brummies heyday. Roll on March, I can't wait.

Don Crisp
Fantastic news brummies returning to perry barr.hope big Arthur & the grahme bros been invited.will be their on 29th nov to hear all about our new team & track, well done Tony,Brian & everyone conected to this project.

cant wait counting down the weeks verry excited

Brian Powney
Hi there, AT LAST we are going to get speedway back at Brum. When speedway finished in Brum all those years ago i thought wot now. I finally picked up courage to go to Wolerhampton, being a Baggies fan it stuck in the throat a little.I have enjoyed speedway at wolves for a few years now but i shall be glad to be back with The BRUMMIES again.Once again thanx to Tony for all his efforts.

Phil Ross
Used to go in the 1980s. Look forward to going again in 2007

Andrew Dodd
As a massive Speedway fan who follows the Sheffield Tigers I am greatly looking forward to watching speedway at Birmingham's Perr Barr with Sheffield. Hope your 1st season back is a good one, but not too good as to beat my team.

Gary Bromwich
Great to see speedway back in Brum my Dad used to take me in the 70's, and he was involved with the supporters club late 40's early 50's if anyone remembers him 'Roy Bromwich'

Tammie
Living in Nash Sq,Perry Barr - which is within walking distance of the stadium I cannot wait to attend meetings next season as I did in the 1970's over the road at the now one stop centre. There are far more important issues regarding Perry Barr rather than trying to stop speedway. City officers plus residents should try to work together to put a stop to all the negatives in and around the area - and we all know what they are. As for the speedway everyone in the area I have spoken to have all been completely in favour! Let me also say since the removal of the Ladbroke Stadium for the One Stop Centre, Perry Barr has seen more crime, road traffic, fumes and "NOISE".

Ann Yates
At last speedway back in Birmingham. We moved to Sheffield in 1988 but both my husband and I used to watch the Brummies and thats where we met. Cant wait to come and visit and meet up with old friends. Speedway is great for families and a good night out. I started going to see the Brummies in the early 70's (I was 6 at the time) and it was great. You cant complain about the noise there is more trouble from football traffic and supporters. Up the Brummies !

michael roberts
Excellent news speedway returns, entertainment for all the family a great sport no trouble just pure enjoyment. May the BRUMMIES run for many Years. I fail to see what the problem is with speedway many objectors i have spoken to have never been to speedway so why object to many nimbys.Good luck to all at BIRMINGHAM speedway.

phil blackmore
i assume Mr moore that if you are going to complain against 15 minutes of noise 1 aweek, i can expect you on the streets of perry barr complaaining every night against the noise of the cars?? thought not. you live in a very noisey area of birmingham one would assume living there you are happy with this level of Db's

Gary Felton
Absolutely - great family entertainment in a friendly atmosphere - nice to have it back.

pwright159@aol.com
i am very glad its back at perry bar i met my wife on speedway train between bham wton on 5th may 1956

John Phipps
brilliant news I can still remember all the riders from the 50's Hunt Warren Bennett Payne Mountford Bastable My dad and I used to stand on the second bend just after the pits and also remember the march before the start when the St Johns brigade and the rakers came out

Roy Sedgwick
As a fan in the post war era, living within a sniff of the bikes wondrous aroma I can't wait to see the Brummies race again. I shall miss going home though with face blacked from the first bend cinders, hankie at the ready to poke an odd piece out of my eyes too. Whatever is said, the Japanese are ireplaceable with their roaring exhaust notes, though I shall be deeply inhaling the smell so missed all these years. Welcome back Brummies!

happyman
good luck to all concerned with bringing speedway back to the 2nd city i'll be coming over from cov as often as p[ossible

Gerry Cannell
I agree with most of the local people, it's great news that The Brummies are coming back. I was speaking with a man from Teddington Grove, who is absolutely delighted, and is hoping that they have season ticket availability. Well done to all concerned!. Gerry Cannell.

uk_martin
Brian - If you have objections, you may be interested to know that the Promoters are having a Public Day, where they will be happy to meet with any objectors face to face. If you are brave enough, you will be made most welcome, I am sure. The meeting is at the Perry Barr Stadium, starting at 7pm on Wed 29th November. I understand that the Public Meeting will be open to Speedway Fans and Objectors alike, and all views will be answered by the Promotion. I hope that we will see you there, else it may all be uncomfortably like a love-in if there are no dissenting voices to be heard.

uk_martin
I'm so glad Brian Moore has voiced an objection. It almost looked like it was a communist style "everyone in agreement" thread. At least with one objector in the city, Birmingham is slowly edging closer towards becoming a real democracy where freedom od speech can be expressed, even if it's one man against the masses.

George [ Michael's Dad ]
Having started suporting "THE BRUMMIES" in the late 40's I will make every efort to be there on opening night. UP THE BRUMMIES !!

brummie boy
re:brian moore. sorry brian but u will not stop us. we r back to stay.

chris eley
the best news the Black Country could even dream of; so much pleasure for so many deserving people.

Brian Moore
Not all are happy, I for one am not, speedway in this area is not needed, the noise it will bring to this area, I know that many are planning a protest to this, and have been told that this can now be stopped before the new owners get full grant of the speedway officals. If this can be stopped by Novemeber which is planned then no speedway wil be at Perry Barr.

David Swain
Enjoying Birmingham Speedway, as a spectator, since 1963 I recently travelled to Brandon to recapture my love of the sport, seeing Coventry beat Wolves. However, nothing could possibly compare with seeing the Brummies and, 'though my favourite star, Arne Pander, is unable to witness the re-opening, I know all my fellow Brummies will support Tony Mole, plus his warrior team who have restored the Brummies. Many thanks to our councillors for having the wherewithal to overcome the objectors and provide a truly family sport to our region. We will not let all these peoples' faith be wasted. "Come on you Brummies."

Paul Colder
Best speedway news in 20+ years!

Tony Wilson
In reply to D.Nash, money will never spoil speedway because there's no money in it for the riders unless they reach the highest level. Thanks to everyone for their comments and to the BBC for publishing this page. Cheers all.

David Pegg
Fantastic news - the more tracks the better as far as I'm concerned! I will definitely be making a visit in 2007.

D. Nash
My dad used to take me in the late 70's,/early 80's.He'd not long split with my mum, & this is what we did for our 'Father & Son' time. I can still recall the sounds, the smells, the shale on the face, & of the course the 'spills'. Can't wait to introduce my kids to this wonderful sport. I only hope that money hasn't spoiled this too, in the same way that it has managed to spoil football? See you in March 2007. ps Don't suppose Stevie B's still riding is he?!

Chris (Webby) Browne
Weldone to everyone concerned, at last a major sport returns to a major city, weldone especially to the Brians, Buck and Bott. webby www.brummiespeedway.co.uk

Dave
Revival of Birmingham speedway at their spritual home of Perry Bar a welcome return? - Silly question!! Of course it is! Most folk in the City were in favour as the Birmingham Mail reader polls showed. The noise problems have been extremely exagerated. Speedway ran successfully at Perry Bar from the 50's till the early 80's at two different stadiums with no problems in a time when the bikes were far noisier than what they are now. The students at the nearby University campus won't be there for much of the speedway season and even when they are, they'll be to preoccupied wih their own activities to even notice the speedway. I was told that duing noise tests in the summer at the University the noise from the nearby roads completely drowned out the speedway bikes anyway! Basicaly one speedway meeting a week on a Wednesday during the months of March to October equates to about 30 minutes per meeting spread out through two and a half hours which wouldn't be hardly heard outside of the stadium confines. It certainly doesn't constitute a noise problem! The Birmingham Brummies speedway outfit will provide locals of all ages with a positive leisure outlet something that our often troubled City should cherish and encourage! Economically speedway will boost the areas well being and provide locals with jobs! With the history of Birmingham speedway and the astute speedway promotor and businessman Tony Mole at the helm I think a well run Birmingham speedway outfit has every chance of becoming a well supported success! Lets hope after the 3 year trial period has lapsed that the Council will do the correct thing and grant full planning rights to speedway at Perry Bar!

steven brookes
I used to attend the Perry Barr track in the seventies as a st john ambulance cadet with my dad,i always had a free programme, and i tried my best to fill in the scoresheet.i remember the stalls selling badges, jackets, scalves etc. great memories!! can't wait to take my seven year old son in march 2007

ministerofport
I would like to thank everyone concerned for re-introducing speedway to Brum. It seems to me that you have a council who listen. Hope to be at as many meetings that we are able to attend.

Michael
I have been so excited since the news broke. My Dad introduced me to speedway when I was a lad and I was hooked right from the start. And now I have the chance to hand over the baton to my two lads. A family sport indeed. Fantastic

uk_martin
As a resident of Perry Barr, I wholeheartedly welcome the return of the Brummies to their ancestral home. There are so many reasons why Speedway is good for the locality, not least of which being that for once the City will have a facility that’s not exclusively for the over 18’s. Family members young and old come together to watch what has always been a family sport. The name of Perry Barr is known throughout the country as “the place where they used to have the speedway”. Well now past tense will become present tense again and the profile of Perry Barr and Birmingham in general will be elevated once again. In fact with no speedway happening in London, the Brummies will be the largest city team in the country. Compared to many other stadiums, Perry Barr’s is one of the best too, so any “away” fans coming to Perry Barr won’t help but be impressed with the standard of facility here, again boosting the image of the City in general. The local businesses will benefit from lots more passing trade and the 50,000 Polish population of Birmingham will have a summer sport that they can understand (Speedway being bigger in Poland than it is here) I really do wish the next generation Brummies all the best, and I am sure that the management will be looking to bring the kind of success to Birmingham that the Brummies of the mid-70’s brought. “Birmingham, League Champions” was a headline that only Speedway has ever brought the City, and I look forward to seeing that again.

Adrian
BRILL NEWS.....The famous red B's will back at Perry Barr. What great news. Well Done

Liz White
Not a moment too soon! I was an avid speedway fan in the 70s and 80s, although not in Birmingham. (Newcastle Diamonds and Halifax Dukes)It's great to have a team to support again in my adopted home city.

Geoff Lamb
