Weather frustrates

Keep in touch with the Midlands' top club cricket as we highlight the Birmingham League.

July 22, 2006.

The competition at the top of the Premier Division may be intensifying after second-placed Walsall made up six points on leaders West Bromwich Dartmouth.

The headline grabbers, though, were bottom club Shrewsbury after their second victory of the season against Moseley.

The first division leaders, Harborne, had a comfortable eight-wicket win at Halesowen and now enjoy a 20 points lead over second-placed Shifnal.

In division two, Attock also made it a week to forget for Cannock after dominating the third game on the trot against the Staffordshire club in the space of just four days.

Premier Division

It was a weekend when weather interruptions tested cricketers’ patience right across the league.

Top dogs Dartmouth were bowled out for 155 by lowly Knowle & Dorridge but rain prevented further play to leave Knowle hovering just above the drop zone.

The defeat enabled second-placed Walsall to pull back six points on West Brom with a winning draw against Kenilworth.

Kenilworth’s top scorer, Andrew Whitehall, ended unbeaten on 76 to set Walsall a target of 235.

In the event, though, 109 for seven ensured a winning draw for Walsall and a reduced deficit behind leaders Dartmouth of 17 points after a quickfire 35 not out from Mark Green completed a 12 points haul.

Division One

Stephen Moreton’s six for 82 ensured division one leaders Harborne reduced Halesowen to 190 all out.

Moreton then made a brisk unbeaten 78, ably assisted by 66 not out from Simon Gear, to confirm an eight wicket, 24 points victory.

Wolverhampton enjoyed a winning draw at home to Bromsgrove who were bowled out for 161.

Success looked on the cards for the Danescourt side when they reached 96 for one with Andrew Gait unbeaten on 54 but the rain had the last word.

Division Two

Good day for Attock
Good day for Attock

To rub salt into the wounds of the Twenty20 final defeat, Attock dominated for the third consecutive match against top dogs Cannock.

53 from the final’s man of the match, Imran Sabir, helped to guide Attock to 163 for five declared from just 26 overs.

However, despite five for 84 from Sabir, Cannock avoided defeat by ending on 139 for nine. David Powles made 49.

Penn rose to third spot in the table behind Cannock and Aston Manor.

Penn’s three wicket win against Old Elizabethans saw both Joe Roberts and Richard Norgrove complete five wicket hauls to dismiss their visitors for 181.

Amit Sharma’s unbeaten 94 saw Penn home with three wickets in hand to complete a 24 points win.
