WM Presenters

Marverine Cole

Marverine Cole

Marverine's done a variety of jobs before settling into radio. She's now at the helm of the Saturday night show between 8 and 10pm. Find out more about Marverine and how to get in touch with her...

A Brummie born and bred, Marverine's been dabbling in radio for the last thirteen years.

After getting her degree in Business Studies in Leicester she opted for presenting on hospital radio, which lead to traffic and travel broadcasting (where she met Mollie Green!) and to hosting her own shows on commercials station in the North West and in Warwickshire.

Marverine spent ten years as Personal Assistant to Managing Directors and Chief Execs in different industries. And she's also had stints as a supermarket basket handle-maker(!) and a betting shop cashier.

Then one day in 2003, she decided to give it all up and take the plunge to study a postgraduate in journalism at UCE Birmingham.

She might look familiar because, since then, she's been a TV reporter on ITV's Central News and BBC Midlands Today.

Best known to BBC WM listeners as a newsreader, she's now at the helm of the Saturday night show between 8 and 10pm across the West Midlands and Warwickshire.

Marverine says about the Saturday night show: "The show is a heady mix of lively debate about all sorts of news issues affecting black people. With celebrity interviews, some terrific music and a look at the local arts scene thrown in. Saturday nights on BBC WM should be a date for everyone's diary!"

Marverine's also a keen black history buff and recommends these books if you're looking to kick-start your studies:

  • Race First (The Ideological and Organizational Struggles of Marcus Garvey...) by Tony Martin
  • The West and The Rest of Us: White Predators, Black Slavers and the African Elite by Chinweizu
  • How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney
  • Black Holocaust for Beginners  by S.E. Anderson
  • Destruction of Black Civilization (Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C to 2000 A.D)  by Chancellor Williams
