One Tape Challenge
One Tape Challenge

The One Tape Challenge

Many journalists claim they work better with a tight deadline. Local TV video journalist Brady Haran is taking that to an extreme with his "One Tape Challenge".

As the name suggests, Brady's allowed to use just one tape to film each of these special reports.

But there's another catch!

Once he presses record on the camera, Brady's NOT allowed to press stop. That means everything that happens, good or bad, is captured on video.

When the tape runs out after 60 minutes, so does Brady's time.

The One Tape Challenge appears occasionally on Local TV bulletins for Birmingham and the Black Country.

Venice Canals

It's always said there are more miles of canal in Birmingham than Venice.

Brady decided to test this theory by measuring the waterways in both cities.

Armed with a trundle wheel to measure the miles, he encountered geese, tourists and gondaliers.

But which city had more canals?

Pub crawl

To mark the six month anniversary of extended trading hours, Brady set out on a high-speed pub crawl.

His mission was to count how many bars, pubs and clubs he could find in the usual one-hour time limit.

So, how many do you think he found? And could the ex-pat Aussie resist the lure of an Australian-themed pub on Broad St?

The results may surprise you!

Father's Photos

Brady's father, Peter, spent some of his childhood in Acocks Green.

During his childhood in the early 1960s, Peter took some blurry black-and-white photos of the area.

With his usual one-hour deadline, Brady played detective and attempted to re-create some of his father's pictures.

But, as he raced around Acocks Green, he found the suburb had changed more than he expected.

Bull's Eye

The bull outside the Bullring is one of Birmingham's best known landmarks.

But being a statue, the poor beast is stuck looking in the same direction 24 hours a day.

Brady spent one of those hours standing alongside the bull and asked the question, what exactly is the bull looking at?

And more importantly, does he see in colour or black and white?

First Impression

Mark Hofmeyer

What do tourists think when they first arrive in Birmingham?

Brady met up with his friend Mark, from Australia, and taped his first hour in the city.

Along the way, Mark shared his views on architecture, statues and the abundance of signage.

He also snapped a few photos with his disposable camera and took a ride on the Bullring bull.

Panda
Brady - living the panda dream

How would do you cover the story of Babu the red panda being named 2005 Brummie of the Year?

Brady donned a giant panda suit and hit the streets in search of some lunch (ie: bamboo).

Along the way he asks various people - and two elves - what they think about Babu's unlikely victory.

But will he be able to find any bamboo before the 60-minute tape runs out?

Ice skating

There's a giant ice rink in Centenary Square… an obvious location for the One Tape Challenge.

Brady put on his ice skates and headed out onto the ice with a simple mission - don't fall over!

Sounds simple, but the problem is that Brady can't skate.

Things get further complicated when he notices some girls on the ice.

Will the girls will be impressed by Brady's skating technique?

Ferris wheel

You see it all the time, but do you ever really look at it?

The giant ferris wheel in Birmingham slowly turns all day and night.

Brady asked how quickly does it rotate?

Unfortunately, his short attention span made the task harder than it may seem!
