Wrestling - we love it!

Jasbinder, Jaskirt and Sukhjinder Dhaliwal are big wrestling fans. They'd never been to a live show, so jumped at the chance to see their heroes in action at the NIA. Jaskirt tells us about the thrill of the night and their passion for the sport.

Me, my brother and sister, have been wrestling fans for as long as we can remember. From the heady days of Macho Man, Bret Hart, the Ultimate Warrior, Sting and when the Hulk was actually young - our memories of wrestling have always been of the spectacle and amazing shows the ‘superstars’ put on.

A tribute to Eddie

This week when we learnt of the news that Eddie Guerrero, one of our favourite wrestlers, had passed away we were both in shock and disbelief. He was only 38. He had been clean and sober for 4 years, and had fought his inner demons to become the first American Mexican to lift the WWE Championship title.

He was one of the true greats that knew how to entertain both in and outside of the squared circle. He will be sorely missed.

THE NIA was buzzing

As this was our first time to a live wrestling event, and with the sad news of Eddie’s passing, we thought it was only right to tribute him with a special banner.

As we entered the arena, the buzz and anticipation was phenomenal! There were huge queues to enter the venue and the majority of the crowd were young kids with their parents, which made a welcome change.

It was unlike any other concert, show or sports event we’d gone to before. It was better. There were all round WOOOO’s (one of which I proudly started) and there were so many banners, not only for Eddie, but for the other Superstars on show. It is true to say that there are no fans like wrestling fans.

Once the show began, the excitement was incredible! We were seated on the ground floor, and had a brilliant view of all the action, as well as the superstars’ entrances. Thus we got to experience the whole show up close and personal.

We got to boo the baddies!

First out was Tajiri and Chris Masters, and like on the TV shows, we got to experience the true pantomime feel of the show, boo-ing the ‘baddies’ and cheering the ‘goodies’!

It was so much fun, especially for all the little kids there. It might be a cliché, but watching on TV and seeing it live, really is two very different experiences.

The Diva

The Diva’s entrance and tag match drew much applause (and wolf whistling) from the male parts of the crowd.

The only down point of the whole night, for me, came from the ‘we want puppies’ chant that a few Neanderthal men decided to shout during the Diva’s clash. Really there’s no need, you don’t see the women shouting ‘we want to see some ass’ do you? But we didn’t have to wait long until we did!

Missing a photo opportunity

In the thrilling match where Shaun Michaels was pitted against Kurt Angle, the Heart Break Kid didn’t wait to long to show Angle up.

During some floor grappling, HBK got a hand on Angle and managed to inadvertently yank down his costume to reveal his bottom to the whole crowd! Unfortunately I didn’t manage to capture the moment, but it will remain one of our funniest wrestling moments ever.

The match that ensued between the two though was awe-inspiring. It felt so surreal to watch and be so close to these Superstars we have long admired.

Seeing them do the ‘Ankle lock’ and ‘sweet chin of music’ only feet away from us was absurd and fantastic all at once!

As soon as the lights go out, and the music starts everybody was up on their feet and dashing to the ringside to get a better look!

Triple H and Cena in action

Sukhjinder’s favourite moment of the night had to be seeing Triple H and his entrance, being a HUGE fan of his.

Jasbinder’s was seeing John Cena (who she’s in love with, and if by any chance he reads this says ‘will you marry me’) and the Nature Boy Ric Flair.

Mine? Well the whole night was unbelievable, I don’t even remember what happened in each individual match that well, but seeing all the superstars I’ve long admired, hearing the rumble of stamping feet and the crowd chanting was a huge highlight.

We love you all

But by far the best part was summed up by Cena when he commented what this meant to him and the fellow superstars after such a tough week, and what the fans meant to him. ‘I love you Birmingham’ he said as the crowd chanted ‘Eddie, Eddie, Eddie’. We love you too, and especially Eddie.
