Birmingham’s Christmas celebrations got off to a fabulous start on Saturday with the Christmas Lights Switch On concert at Millennium Point.

More than 30,000 people attended the four hour, free concert throughout the day.

The crowd were treated to a surprise video message from England and Warwickshire cricketers Ashley Giles and Ian Bell, who recently helped win the Ashes and who are currently on tour in Pakistan.

The pair counted down to the magic moment when Tony Christie and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor John Hood, officially switched on the city’s Christmas lights.

The concert saw a total of eleven acts perform live on stage including Tony Christie, Girls Aloud, Liberty X, Friday Hill, Big Brovaz and Love Bites. The event was also used to showcase local talent, with Birmingham band the Light opening up the show.
