FLIP is billed as the Midlands’ only animation festival. Organised by the Light House Media Centre in Wolverhampton, it celebrates animation produced regionally, nationally and internationally and aims to inspire and entertain people of all ages. This year’s festival is being held over three days at venues in Wolverhampton and Birmingham, from Thursday 27th of October to Saturday 29th of October 2005. The programme is packed with screenings, debates, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and opportunities to hear from industry specialists. THURSDAY 27 OCTOBER 7.00PM - 9.00PM VENUE: CUSTARD FACTORY, GIBB STREET, BIRMINGHAM The FLIP festival kicks off at the Custard Factory in Birmingham, linking with Ideasfactory West Midlands’ Creative Festival 05. In 2004, the SE3D animation scheme offered free access to 12 groups of animators to Hewlett Packard Labs’ high powered computers. The project involved animators, digital artists and production companies. SE3D animators David Ledsam and Stuart Barnecutt of Wolverhampton based studio Screenburn and project co-ordinator Clare Reddington will discuss the scheme, the technology behind it and present the completed films. This is an opportunity to see some inventive and innovative animation from Denmark. This screening will feature award winning animations from the National Film School of Denmark, whose past graduates have included internationally acclaimed directors Lars Von Trier, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg. Bjørno & Bingo by Sabine Ravn will be shown, which in the last year has picked up five ‘best animation’ awards. This is a chance to see all the films short-listed for the BBC New Talent: BBC Three, New Animators Award. The scheme has invited submissions from up and coming animators, brimming with distinctive ideas. The winner will have their film featured on BBC Three and may also receive funding to develop an animation project. This panel will offer advice for those who are trying to get a foot in the door of the animation industry. TALK: ALAN BATSON - 6.30 – 7.15PM Having served in the advertising field for many years as an Art Director gaining experience in all aspects of design, Alan went into the character design market for the animation and games industries. He has worked as a designer for characters, merchandise and publishing on projects for a varied client base including Hanna- Barbera, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, the BBC and Hasbro. Alan has been trained by Disney and has operated a freelance career working closely with the Walt Disney Company for over 10 years on Standard, Classic and Pixar characters. He is currently working with West Midlands based studio, The CharacterShop, as production designer on Friends and Heroes, a 39 episode children’s adventure series. SCREENING: AIR SAT 29 OCTOBER 5.00 - 6.15PM VENUE: LIGHT HOUSE, CINEMA 1 The AIR (Animator in Residency) Scheme, funded by Channel 4 and based at the National Museum of Photography, Film & TV, supports the creative development work of talented animation graduates, with a particular focus on the craft of the discipline. This screening will showcase recent work from the scheme and will be followed by a Q&A with some of the animators and the scheme co-ordinator. This screening will showcase the 18 shortlisted films submitted by Staffordshire University, the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Central England. The screening will be followed by an announcement of the winners. This year’s judges include Ruth Fielding, Channel 4 consultant and NESTA talent scout, local animation studio Screenburn Ltd, Nicola Scurlock from PS Creative, animation director Chris Randall, and Sam Hope from Exposure Animation. SCREENING: ESTINGS & FLIP PARTY SAT 29 OCTOBER 8.45PM - LATE VENUE: LIGHT HOUSE BAR, GALLERY & CINEMA E4 and Creative Review invited up and coming talent to surprise, delight and make them fear for their sanity with ESTINGS 3. The results of this competition can be seen at this special festival premiere which will showcase the winner and the 24 shortlisted submissions. This year’s winner, Olly Reid, has since been commissioned by E4 to make a series of idents and animations for the station.
