Shimm1 - You Get Me?

Wolverhampton born, Digbeth based rap artist, producer, songwriter, director and record label boss Shimm1 is releasing his debut single 'You Get Me' on the 31st of October 2005. We asked him a few questions...

Hello Shimm, how are you? Excited about the new single?

I'm good. In fact I'm real good! I wouldn't say I'm excited, but more content, that things are moving forward for me...

Tell us about the new single. What does it sound like? Who does it sound like? Is it any good?

Whoa! Let me start from the top! The new single, called "You Get Me" isn't that new!! It was a track recorded some time ago. But when I shot the video which has aired on Channel U, MTV Base and BBC Big Screen - it was enough to kick start negotiations with my licensee "Halo Records".

The idea was laid down in two hours. It has a heavy bass line that runs thoughout the track, with quirkly little 'dotty' sounds that skip through the track to keep the momentum going. Lyrically, it's laced with bravado, but does use humour too.
It doesnt sound like anything in particular, but you could say that the scatty/dotty sounds that 'Jazze Pha' uses, (produced for Nelly and Ciara) are similar (I did it first!).
Shimm1 doesnt really sound like any artist, but I have been likened to a cross between Jay-Z and Eminem - without the American twang though!

The record is good because I made it!!! (laughs) - The title: "You Get Me" is a universal phrase that everyone from the guy on the building site to the kid in the playground uses at some point.

You had a launch party in Wolverhampton? How did it go?

You've done ya research?!! Ha ha.  It was great. The crowd were mainly people who I knew, so it had a 'members only' feel. and because I am very hands on with my career, I organised the event, sorted the PA, the DJ etc etc myself.  I like to perform, and to perform in the City were I was born is always cool...

Do you have more local performances lined up?

I have performed [in Wolverhampton] at Revolution, Bar S2, The Grand Theatre, The Connaught Hotel, and in local schools, so I have pretty much done the City - however, around the release date of the single I am going to try and work something out with 'Sugar', 'Canal' and 'Atlantis' - as they are deemed the big clubs in Wolverhampton.  I am working on Barracuda in Birmigham where DJ Sacha Brooks [Galaxy FM] does her thing also...

Tell us about your plans for the future. An album? What's it called?

My plan is to take over the world! (I'm being serious). For far too long there has been a 'geographic bias' outside of London in relation to the urban music scene, and I want to put that right.  With the wealth of resources (i.e TV, radio and press) that the 'Londoners' have at their fingertips some of them are a bit lackadaisical in my opinion.  Some of the biggest Urban Stars hail from the Midlands - (UB40, Jamelia, Beverley Knight, The Streets, Goldie), so what does that tell you? - I want to continue what they have started...

My album is called "The Silencer LP" because in my eyes, I have been limited to what I can achieve for so long, solely based on my geographic location and now I'm about to prove to the country (and eventually the world) that inner city black males who are given the lowest life expectancies, by society can make things happen!

I'm from a broken home/single parent but still I went to University and got a Law Degree, then switched my 'abilty to dedicate myself' to the music business and I predict that every single person that has tried to dissuade me or tell me that it would never happen, will talk out of the other side of their faces once they hear the album and the singles that accompany it.

We think you're a star. Are you going to  be a superstar?

No... I'm going to be the whole Galaxy and Milky Way and chuck in a few new planets for good measure!!!
