 | | The 'beach' |
StarCity was restyled into a beach over the weekend of 13th and 14th August. Half the car park was converted into a mock beach front with a variety of activities for people of all ages - and all free of charge! On the beach In the middle of the “beach” was a mass of sand, with deck chairs and even a small Punch and Judy stand, all enclosed by a small white picket fence. This was a particular favourite of young kids and parents. The mums and dads could relax on the deck chairs. Whilst the kids challenged each other to try and build the biggest sandcastle!

The face painting was even more popular. Every other person I saw seemed to be painted as either a pirate or butterfly. The fact so many people were embracing the ‘beach party’ theme, helped create a holiday-esque mood. In which everyone simply wanted to enjoy themselves and have a change from their everyday lives. Surf and bungee For the more adventurous, there was a surfing simulator and bungee. Sophie and Tanith-Leigh, both aged 11, had great fun on the surfboard. Sophie was brill on the board and managed to stay on for at least a couple of minutes without falling off. They particularly liked it because, there was ‘so much to do and most of it is free!’ The bungee jump looked a bit too high and daring for me. I wouldn't have been surprised if the jumpers were visible from the M6!

If those attractions weren’t enough or you weren't up to a physical challenge, there was plenty for you to watch. Towards the far end of the ‘beach’ were the Kangaroos Gymnastic and Trampoline Display Team, from Newton Regis. Their performance was amazing and their talent was obvious to see. They were all in sync with one another and as a team they produced a visual spectacle. Somehow they had time to do triple somersaults, despite only being in the air for a few seconds. Tropical atmosphere

The centre of activity had to be at the main stage. There was a variety of talent, from a steel band, acrobats to limbo dancers. The steel band brought a hint of the Caribbean to Birmingham, creating a relaxed, tropical atmosphere. Whilst the acrobats amazed the audience with their flexibility and polished routine. Peter Andre Even though the “beach” was heaving with activity, there was still someone on everyone’s mind. The star attraction, even more sought after than sun, sea and sand….. Peter Andre. When he came on stage, the sun came out and the beach really came to life!
