Villa blog

By James Hill
The BBC Birmingham website has teamed up with a Villa fan to give you a fan's eye view of Aston Villa Football Club this season.

Saturday 13 August 2005 - Aston Villa 2 - 2 Bolton

The 'Mike Riley Circus' rolled into Villa Park once again on Saturday and as always this excuse for a referee turned what could have been a highly entertaining football match into a stop-start cure for insomnia.

The game started at a frenetic pace and when new signing Hughes provided the cross for fellow newcomer Philips to head home, after what seemed like seconds, the thought on every Villa fans mind was 'now we're on the up at last'.

It didn't last, defensive frailties cost Villa the win and the match ended 2-2 with all the goals coming in the first 8 minutes.

On the positive it was important for Villa not to lose the first game of the season, and lets not forget that Bolton are no mugs.

From a personal point of view it was great to be back at the home of football. Even if late security tannoy announcement tests did mean that quite few people started leaving the ground before the game had started!

Chatting to fellow season ticket holder and neighbour, Billy prior to kick off, a whole summers worth discussions came out. Particularly, Peter Crouch and Kevin Philips likeness to players of old.

If anyone out there who's a little longer in the tooth than myself can pass comment on the ability of Tony Hately I'd be interested to hear. Billy and my Dad tell me he could hit a sixpence from 30 yards with his head, but couldn't hit a barn door with either foot!

Other players who I'd love to hear memories of who were mentioned are Alex Cropley, Jimmy McCewan, Ray Graydon and Bruce Rioch.

I live in New York now, but back in the sixties I was a Chelsea fan (still am!) and used to go to Stamford Bridge, and I remember Hately. He came from a team in one of the lower divisions, if I remember. He was tall, almost like Crouch, and I believe he scored a number of exciting goals, and Chelsea thought he was the cat's pajamas and signed him for some astronomical price (big for those days, I mean - it would be peanuts now!). He couldn't do a damn thing. Even Crouch, whom I must admit I don't greatly admire, is ten times the player Hateley was. Nice chap, I gather, but clueless. After a short time he was quietly dropped, and sold or otherwise liquidated! I was amused to read your column, because when I first saw Crouch poncing around the goalmouth I thought instantly of our Tony Hately!

Yes that is true, he wasn't the greatest with the actual ball at his feet. I remember Tony Hately from the days when i used to watch the Villa. However his greatest game-or I think so- was against Spurs at White HArt Lane, I heard the half-time score Villa were down 5-1, and I thought it was all over. I picked up the Saturday Argus to get the results and the final score was 5-5, Tony Hately had scored 4 goals in the secong half an amazing feat, but not with his feet.

I agree Cropley the best left footed player ever to grace Villa Park. The tackle at the Hawthorns by the way was criminal intent. The only time I ever wanted to run on the pitch was then at the Hawthorns. Rioch was also brilliant, some of his free kicks were a dream.

Ross Cropley
Its a pleasure for me that there are still alot of people in the area who still hold my dad in such high regard. I was to young to see him play, but have seen videos, and heard stories,so thank you on behalf of my dad.My younger brother Jordan is now playing for Hibs u19's,and believe me is one for the future!
