Dr Naseem: Have your say

Dr Mohammed Naseem, the Chairman of the Birmingham Central Mosque, has sparked new controversy with his comments following the Government’s anti-terrorism proposals unveiled on Friday.

Dr Naseem is one of the elder statesmen of Islam in Britain and has been a leading figure among Muslims for many years in Birmingham.

His position in the city arguably means he runs one of the most important Islamic institutions in Britain, the mosque being regularly used by thousands of Muslims from across the West Midlands.

Hitler

He says he sees “similarities” between Tony Blair’s approach to Britain’s Muslim community and Adolf Hitler’s demonisation of Jews early in his time as German Chancellor.

“He [Hitler] was democratically elected and gradually he created a bogey identity, that is, the Jewish people, and posed to the Germans that they were a threat to the country. On that basis, he started a process of elimination of Jewish people.

“I see the similarities. Everything moves step by step. I am saying these are dangerous times and we must take note of this.”

Al-Qaeda

Last week, Dr Naseem questioned whether Muslims were behind the London bombs and whether al-Qaeda even exists.

Speaking to BBC Radio WM on 21st July he said “I don’t think al-Qaeda exists because we Muslims all over the world have not known this organisation. The only information about this organisation is coming from the CIA. Now, the CIA is not known for telling the truth.”

Resign

Birmingham Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood called for him to resign after his comments in the wake of terror suspect Yasin Hussan Omar’s arrest in the Small Heath area of Birmingham in connection with the July 21st attempted bombings.

He said “If he [Dr Naseem] wants to make cheap political points then he really ought to relinquish his position as chairman and let somebody who is neutral and has the interests of the community do it.”

The MP said that he would now be calling for a full investigation into how the Mosque is run, it’s membership and how its funds are managed.

But Dr Naseem has remained defiant and refused to withdraw the comments he made about the Government and Tony Blair. He claims 4,000 worshippers have voted for him to stay in his role.

Support

“I have had a lot of support not only from worshippers at the Mosque, but from people across the country both Muslim and non-Muslim and I am sticking by what I have said.

Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood said Dr Naseem had brought the role of mosque chairman into disrepute.

But Dr Naseem said he did not believe he had been offensive or controversial: "To the best of my belief, I haven't said something I thought was unhelpful," he said.

"I was trying to put the record straight.”

As an American, it is refreshing to understand Dr Naseem's point of view.

I am British. I love my country, and I embrace all beliefs and cultures, and personally, I am deeply insulted by the nazi comparison. My family fought against that filthy little dictator, they are my heroes. Because of them, I have a life of freedom. Don't ever compare me to that nasty, self righteous, piece of unhuman junk.

Your logic is clearly flawed - to my knowledge the Jews were interested in commerce, not blowing up innocent people (that was Hitler's forte and seemingly the tactic of extreme Muslim groups, no doubt further encouraged by your Britophobic rant - who should we compare to Hitler - you?). I expect no more from a religious group / culture which prefers to blame their troubles on others rather than taking responsibility for their own lives - this is an undeniable truth. Trust in God?, as you do, always, but God helps those who help themselves and for centuries your culture has atrophied because you have forgotten this truth and preferred to seek excuses why your culture has failed, and to seek others to blame and hate. This denial of your own failing is a cancer in the world of Islam, which will surely harm the respect that others have for your faith, unless you can demonstrate a more responsible and even-handed approach. What happened to the fabulous cultural, intellectual, educational, engineering and architectural wonders of the Islamic world – you just got lazy and fell back on God, many centuries ago. You fell behind and now you seek to blame others for your failings, while taking advantage of the many privileges afforded to you by living in the West - if you truly believe that you are disadvantaged in Britain, then clearly you should give up British citizenship and find a more just society - if you can. Of course you won't - that's why you prefer to be here, privileged, supported by the state and safe from REAL persecution (as is happening to non-Islamic communities throughout the Islamic world – Nigeria, Indonesia, Lebanon, etc). Why don’t you speak out against that? I challenge you, if you are a true liberal. Britain is the most tolerant and civilised country in the world, and you should be proud to be British. But living in our liberal society, and having the freedom of speech, carries with it, on the other side of the coin, the duty to take personal responsibility for the effects of your statements - 'I haven't said something I thought was unhelpful'. Oh yes you have, believe me, unhelpful to me and to the vast majority of law-abiding British citizens of all faiths and creeds, who want a society that allows all of us to prosper in peace (and, you know, most of us don’t care who prospers, anyone who works for prosperity, on merit – that is the beauty of our culture, which your comments seek to pervert!). Your remarks are poisonous for Britons (of every ethnic and religious group), especially those who have lost loved ones to the hateful and uncivilised behaviour of Islamic religious zealots. I believe you have no sense of justness, and no conscience, and that your words are callous, manipulative and designed to further forment troubles in our fabulous country – these troubles didn't exist before Saudis bombed New York. Don't forget that hundreds of Britons died that day. Don't attempt to hide behind those pathetic conspiracy theorists, given credence (but only for dimwits) on the Birmingham central mosque website, who claim that Muslims had no part in the atrocities against British citizens. I also note that the Birmingham central mosque website has a very balanced view (not) of your comments, from ‘selected’ supportive emails - I guess it's only me who is incensed by your blatant attempt to whip up hatred. I used to think that Islam was a tolerant religion, but ritual beheadings, frankly, give the lie to this idea. Embrace the ‘best in world’ British values of tolerance and fair play, or leave, please, before you do more damage to our society. Being British or Muslim does not need to be a mutually exclusive choice, unless YOU make it so – you can be both, but nationhood is more important than religion in our secular British society – this is you real challenge and is in your hands – not someone else’s reponsibility. Are you up to it? I guess you will not be publishing this on your website, and that will be further proof of your entrenched denial of failings, and it will be the act of a cow

This mans comments are only made to incite unrest and hatred among the muslim community, those in his community must not let themselves be brainwased by his ludicrous rantings.

Dr Mohammed Naseem is just another of the so called "influential Muslim leaders" whose comments are largly ignored by young and increasingly beligerant Muslims whose education and indoctrination are affected by the zhelot Imans brought into this country by orginisations just like the Birmingham Central Mosque has done in the past. The majority of worshippers under 40 years of age still see the regular Imans as niave, unrepresentative of the young and only ever looking towards the middle road for answers and guidance to the problems in the Muslim and wider society. Christians (which I am not)have seen their religious teachings usurped, distorted and totally bastardised for the gratification of zhelots(nutters)for 2,000 years, so why is it people like the Dr. cannot see what is happening to the Muslim congregations in Britain/the World. As a footnote...I, as a history scholar cannot see the similarity between GB. and Nazi Germany. Although there was justified resistance action from the oppressed Jews against the Nazis, I cannot find any suicide bombings of innocents, demonstrations against cartoons, and the absolute determination to hate a country, its people, and society, which GB. does offer to them and me the opportunities in abundance to support them/me and our families wherever they live in this world. No-one has ever said this country is perfect but lets face it, it's a million times better than the so called "old countries" where poverty, disease, corruption and oppression are totally indemic. The common retort to these kind of views are that GB.+ allies have made these countries like that through exploitation, all I can say to that is ...total piffal. British society is not closed to anyone but the muslim society is a closed shop in terms of integration, intellectual discussion and social issues which affect all of us on this increasingly small island. The Koran espouses love and respect to all peoples of this world, but that simple concept does not sit well with the radicallised Imans or their brainwashed flocks.

If Dr Mohammed Nazeem does not like the way the law operates in this country he should get out and stay out. If any charges are made concerning the men arrested this week he will have to eat his words. He needs to get out more!

Natasha Jordan
I can't believe this guy, how can he compare UK to Nazi Germany. Are we rounding up 1000's of muslims and killing them? NO. Have we declared war on europe? NO. Have we banned Muslims from operating businesses? NO . have we stopped muslims from praticing their faith? NO. He is probably unaware that we have been very tolerant of what has become a terror situation in this country. The people of the UK have been tolerant, his words will only alienate more people against peaceful coexistance. He is free to leave if the place is SO bad

mark
this man should wake up if muslims were not ploting to kill people the police would not be them arresting what does he want us to do let them do as they please and do nothing about it we dont try and make muslims change there god so dont expect us to do so to please them let us live without them planting bombs and the police will leave them alone he has now made thins worse by his actions

Ian P
How dare Naseem critisise the police. He and other Muslims have come to this country, refuse to integrate, and some now want to bomb and kill us. If you don't like the UK then go home. Simple.
