With a strut, a turn and a hint of a smile, models showed off the work of some of Birmingham’s young fashion designing talent. The stunning show displayed that you don’t have to go all the way down to London to sparkle. Aspiring designers A mix of students from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design showed off their impressive talent in a glamorous end of year fashion show. And they should pass with flying colours too, as the show produced a wide variety of some sublime and unique work.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect or how I would feel in the lead up to the show, but it certainly wasn’t the feeling I left with. To say I was pleasantly surprised is a complete understatement. I was shocked to say the least that I not only enjoyed the show but was bowled over by the clothes and designs I’d seen. From ball gowns to casual wear In some selections there were items which I would have brought straight off the shelf had it been in a shop, from ball gowns and evening dresses to work clothes and casual wear.

Of course this was no New York fashion week, and these weren’t clothes designed by a Stella McCartney or John Galliano but what it did showcase was the potential for these designers to aspire to become the next Vivienne Westwood or likewise. Undoubtedly there would be an enormous amount of hard work and graft before that ever occurs, but the dedication and passion was clear to see and there is no reason why it couldn’t happen. From there on there was an array of designs and fashions, varying from the sublime to outrageous to ridiculous.

Not everything displayed was great but the diversity and range of clothing were unique in style and fashion, most would rarely be seen in your average high street shop, and it is this experimental individualism that shone through. Thus giving a breath of fresh air to not be subjected to mass identically produced garments from corporate companies lathered into every corner of every city. With collections called ‘70’s Chic’, ‘Gentlemen and feminine’ and ‘button mushrooms’ it was clear that the student designers were inspired to produce above and beyond casual norm. A future career in fashion

Before and after the show all the designers were anxious and excited, about both the show and their impending university free future. Most want to pursue a career into the industry, and many dreamed of one day having their own boutiques, clothing lines and businesses. If this fashion show was anything to go by than those dreams might not be too far off the mark.
