Blues set to miss out on Bowyer

Birmingham look set to miss out on the signing of Lee Bowyer after a petition by supporters which has infuriated club owner David Sullivan.

Bowyer will leave Newcastle this summer after an on-the-pitch incident between him and team-mate Keiron Dyer last season.

The Blues appeared to be in pole position in the race to sign the 28-year-old former England international but a section of fans publicised their opposition to his signing through an online petition.

And Sullivan is "absolutely gutted" that the club could lose out on one of their main summer targets. "It looks like we are now going to lose out on a terrific player due to a small minority of fans, and I am absolutely gutted," he told the club's official website, www.bcfc.com. "English midfielders with his ability are so hard to find. Lee Bowyer would be a fantastic addition to our side.

"We are looking to build the best squad that this club has ever had and the signing of Lee would take us a long way down that road. "But the player has now said that he doesn't want to go to a club where he is not wanted.

"We are potentially going to lose out on a terrific player as a result of this petition and I can't describe how disappointed I feel at the moment."

The St Andrews club are yet to find a long-term replacement for controversial midfielder Robbie Savage who left the midlands to join Blackburn last season.
Sullivan revealed former Leeds star Bowyer was second only to last week's signing Mikael Forssell on manager Steve Bruce's wanted list.

David Sullivan's response is a disgrace -but no more than one expect of a publisher of tasteless magazines. The football club represents the city not Sullivan's personal ambitions

johnp
leave him where he is - he is better of causing havoc up in the north east!!

Joe G
When kennyy Burns signed the same was said about him, the manager is a man who can turn players into the kind we need, have faith in him.

Lee Bowyer is not the only footbaler in the world. There is plenty of choice out there. He isn't exceptionally tallented, and I think he would be abad influence in the dressing room. We don't need this thug at Birmingham.

Andrew W
He may a talent on the pitch but his temperament is there to see right back to his Charlton days He is no shining star is he?

James T
The so called fans who have signed this petition are a disgrace to the club. They show contempt for Steve Bruce and the board who have done so much to turn this club into the success we see today.

Paul, Bromsgrove
Of course Blues should sign Lee Bowyer. He is the sort of player who plays with passion and with his heart on his sleeve. Ideal for Blues who are developing a squad that can go places

Despite Sullivan claiming it's a small minority that don't want him at Blues, I would argue it's the majority of Blues fans that would not like to see him pull on a City shirt. He is a terrible role model for young fans.

Evans
No the Villa should get him it might wake them up

Andy P
I think a lot of Blues fans do not want nasty characters like Bowyer playing at the club, its not a minority who don't want him there. I would not be prepared to hand over my season ticket money to fund his excessive wages, he's an unpleasant character and he would actually put me off attending matches. I'm just glad we've got players like Mika Forsell, who's an absolute professional.

Anne
I think he would be more trouble than he's worth, and no example to younger fans.

Sue Martin
If the opposition to the signing of Bowyer is only from "A small minority of fans" as Sullivan claims, then what's the problem? He shouldn't feel the need to pander to a small minority. Anyway, as a Villa fan, I would be delighted if Blues sign him. He's a bit like Craig Bellamy, Robbie Savage etc - more trouble than he's worth.

lee bowyer is human it is his football skills that count we have all made mistakes . he does not like his team to rollover that`s how it should be we should sign him
