I LOVE SHEESHA!
Its nice & relaxing, Its not as if Muslims can walk into a pub to relax, so it is nice to be able to go to a sheesha lounge and just chillout, smoke some sheesha and catch up with ya friends, its just nice!!! realy hope it doesnt get banned =(
Ricks
I think shisha is great, it is really relaxing. Watching the smooth smoke roll past your face. I love the atmosphere, and the music of the shisha cafes. I have it about onve every 2 weeks. It's definatly soothing for me, and a relaxing experince in my opinion.
Is Shisha
gonna be banned? or is it allowed. can someone tell me. p.s. birmingham rocks 4 shisha
AMPZ
yer im goin to the lounge today my mate has been n said it is good so i am gonna go test it out zoop zoop
Amir
You don't feel like a drinkk or going out clubbing or the usual..having a shisha is a nice way to socialise and chillout!
do not let the smoking ban stop the shisha..but please educate the users on its usage!
Caroline London
We put Shisha pipes in 14 nightclubs with kow seating to calm agression and put an end to vertical drinking. We have found 100% herbal molasses (no tar, nicotine or tobacco) and have found a small heater to replace the coal. We are told that it is the smoke that is banned? No word from the Government? I know many cafe owners in Edgeware road who are still in the dark. If they ban the shisha, there will be uproar and it will damage all the work that has been done to build a bridge between cultures. Outragous.
knowledge
Asma you make me laugh.Sheesha is haram not due to nicotine. any form of tobacco is haram whether it chewed or smoked.
according to the Quran:
“And those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet
who can neither read nor write, whom they find writ-
ten with them in the Tawraah (Torah) and the Injeel
(Gospels), ordering them with al-ma’roof (all things
ordained by Islam), and prohibiting them from al-
munkar (all things prohibited by Islam), and allows
for them at-tayyibaat (all things good and pure) and
prohibits them al- khabaa`ith…”
[Surah al-A’raaf (7):157]
and the sunnah:
It has been related in a hadeeth in Saheeh al-Bukhaari,on the
authority of ‘Umar (ra), who said that the Prophet (saw) said, “Every intoxicant is considered khamr (wine) and every khamr is haraam (impermissible).”
It has also been related by Tirmidhi (which he stated as a hasan hadeeth) and Abu Dawud:
“Every intoxicant is haraam, and anything of which a
large amount intoxicates, even a small amount is
haraam.”
Hope this clears all misconceptions whether it is maqroo or haram.
Me again!
Miroslav: You seem to have alot to say for yourself.. However, no words in the english dictionary or no amount of effort in the way your trying to portray yourself is going to disprove the fact that sheesha lounge = A success. One of the most successfull sheesha places in birmingham and the secret behind it? Abdus. Simple as. Staff are more friendly than nuns in a church..the environment is far from hostile and the sheesha IS of the best quality - not opinion..FACT. If you don't agree with that then obviously you are not as "Well read" as you seem to believe. Further, the spelling of tobacco does not prove how much or how little someone knows of tobacco.
sam
The Babouche lounge in moseley is great and so is mojo's in selly oak. Everyone must try it

SHISHA ROCKS MY WORLD
Asma
I have done Sheesha for a long time and found out that Sheesha for muslims is haraaam as it contains a percentage nicotine which is not allowed.
Me!
Sheesha lounge - All i can say is Abdus well done!
Miroslav
Mr Abdus Sheesha lounge: Thank you for your comments. For a man who represents Sheesha Lounge I would like to give you some information about tobacco as it is clear you know very little. Firstly you should revise your spelling of tobacco, I think that it is very important to know the basics before you advise someone about a tobacco product. Secondly the consumption of tobacco products can be dated back to the civilisation of the Aztec's of South America where tobacco is an indigenous plant species. See your history teacher for more info.
Mr Abdus... Sheesha the tobacco product? (Muassal in Arabic) Or Sheesha the pipe used to smoke Muassal? Your comment regarding the origin of sheesha in India, before tobacco, really does not make any sense at all. In fact Tobacco, as a product of the Nicotiana plant species, was smoked centuries before it was introduced, firstly to Africa (Egypt) before it reached India via trade. Therefore sheesha, if you are referring to Muassal, was not invented before tobacco.
The Arabs no doubt perfected the art of smoking, though tobacco smoking is centuries older. So much so it makes the Arabs seem like they started smoking yesterday.
My original comment rejoiced the wonders of Sheesha, not the origin. Clearly you have not read what I have said. I am eastern European and via the Turks we were introduced to Sheesha. It is as traditional for me to smoke it as it is for an Arab, no doubt Arabs were NOT the 1st to capitalise on the benefits of smoking tobacco which sheesha really is (See above:South America)
Latin American Dance? I am very well travelled Mr Abdus and I am fully aware of the roots of Latin American music and traditions. No doubt they are influenced by the NORTH AFRICAN traditions. If you are pointing out that it is Arabian Influence then you are somewhat correct, though North Africa and Arabia are different in many aspects. For example Morocco is as Black African and Spanish as it is Arab. The connection you are pointing out is invalid sadly and does not bring the discussion of Sheesha cafe's in Birmingham in any new light. I would advise you to stick to the points of the discussion and not fray away into a random banter.
'SECRET' sheesha is referring to something not on your menu. I am quite in my rights to mention this and I will stick to my point. I have no facts but I am very experienced and I know that the 'AK47' is no tobacco combination, even if it was it really beats the point of smoking Sheesha as if I wanted to be intoxicated I would take a trip to a bar or smoke a joint. You are what you feed into your community.
Hostile and war zone? I think you might be over reacting there or trying to divert attention from what I was trying to point out. Clearly this is not an attack on Sheesha Lounge, it is merely a brief description of the environment we were faced with. I have the right to say what I feel and this should not upset you so much. After all Sheesha lounge is a public space.
I wish you the very best of luck in your expansion, surely as well as upholding Arabian traditions you also hold Islamic or Christian values as they go hand in hand, If so then can you discuss the Sheesha in the light of Islam? Is it what you call Halal or Haram?
I would love to hear your comments, and please do note I am very well read.

i luv sheesha its lovely
yasmin
me and my friend Danny think shisha is the best! to some people its just the novelty factor but we LOVE IT!
Syrah Husayn
I have visited the sheesha cafe in the custard factory on a number of occassions and each time i have been greeted with such a pleasant atmosphere, always made to feel comfortable. The owners are welcoming, the layout of the cafe is modernly structured and decor very retro. Ive visited a few but this one has stood out by miles! An amazing variety of flavours to choose from and if its not a smoke you want then definetly try their tea. If you havent been there yet, then you are missing out. The owners have definetly got it right.

ANGEL.dont spread rumours.there is no official studies in the harm of shisha smoking. the research you mention was flawed because there was no mention of wether the subjects smoked ciggarets or any other substances in the past or even at time of study. shisha mollases contains very little nicotine.0.005% to be exact.considering we use 5-7 grams per shisha, you do the maths.it contains no tar!!!and no added chemicals.it is filtered through water.to understand how much of a good filter water is try putting a sheet of tissue paper over a sheesha pipe and taking a drag.then try it with a ciggarett. so how it can be harmful as 20 ciggaretts is beyond me. a 28 year old pharmacist friend of mine has never touched a cig but has smoked a shisha almost every day since the beginning of his student life, thats about 10 years i believe. he recently went for are carbon monoxide test, the results came back as a non smoker living in a city.considering he has lived in birmingham and manchester all his life i find these results quite reassuring.RIZWANA.im sorry you felt that way towards my staff.there are methods of complaining to management if anyone makes you feel uncomfortable. about our crowd.we regularly ask for id insuring all our guests are above the required legal age.im 25 and look 19,so i you can appreciate my views on this subject. if anyone intentionally makes you feel uncomfortable please let the staff know.hope you return soon and if you find any of your issues unresolved please get my number of the guys and we can discuss your concerns.MR STEPHANOVIC.firstly sheesha was invented in india centuries before tabbaco, but you cannot deny it was made popular by the arabs.since then many people have tried it.maybe you dont recognise latin american dance as a latin american tradition. when your 'friend' recomennded ak47 did they forget to mention its a combination of all our strongest flavours and that if you've never tried it before its likely to make slighty dizzy.hence not on the menu and only avaialable at special request.and what you ment by 'SECRET' i dont understand. if you mean know one knows why our sheeshas are the best.well maybe its because were good at what we do and not like our competition who are trying to ride on the bang wagon.Hostile? did u mean busy? lastime i checked, hostile was a word more suited to discribe a warzone. i cant deny our place is small and it makes some people feel uncomfortable,we have been planning to expand for a while and inshallah work shall commence in the new year.

Ok...i am tired of hearing that shisha is "just as damaging to the lungs as ciggerettes" because that is so far from the truth. That statement alone proves that the ignorent medical doctors and researchers waisted 200,000 dollars on medical statement because they cannot come up with a valid argument against this new fad called Shisha. Shisha does not have the tar, nictoine, menthol (which is really tiny bits of fiberglass), and all the other harmful substances in it. When you smoke a cigerette, you don't even know what yoursmoknig exactly because there is to many chemicals in it to name. With shisha , you know what exactly your smoking. Tobacco, filtered by water, with molasses and some flavoring. Big deal. People make the argument that your lungs are meant to breathe air, and thats all...oxygen in its purity if you must, but when you walk outside in new york city for the day, the pollution in the air that is being breathed into your air isnt as much as 500 bowls of shisha. Think about it....thats carbon dioxide being blown out of cars and buildings everywhere. You don't smoke shisha as daily as ciggerettes, and there is no proven evidence that can it can be addicting. If i eat peanut butter sandwhiches, and iget addicted to it, are you going to ban peanut butter sandwhiches just because i like the taste? No. Are you going to ban people from walking aroun in new york city? No. Shisha and Hookahing is the latest fad, and it should be meant to be kept that way. There should be more lounges with this. However, the only thing i really agree with is that it should be 18 to buy tobacco and shisha, to keep the fad from being destroyed in the cliche pop culture that our teenie boppers in this generation destroy, like a good rock song. Then before you know it, you'll have 12-13 year old girls bragging and putting pics of themselves with a hookah on there mypsace, and then the fad will no longer be relaxed and chill anymore. Shisha is clean, and meant to be kept underground and relaxed.
If you want to see the difference between smoking a ciggerrete and smoking shisha. Take a plain white piece of paper and inhale one drag of a ciggerrette and blow onto it. Then, take one from a hookah much later, and blow on it. The piece of paper will be yellow/brown after a ciggerette of just one drag, and it will be clear from the hookah tobacco. Thats the most simple experiment to prove the difference. End of story. My hat goes off to the creators and geniouses who start these hookah lounges. keep it up.

This is a reply to Miroslav Stephanovic. As a girl going to many sheesha places is very enjoyable as you need to try out everywhere possible, but some of the comments you have put down are a little harsh. First of all i don't think at all that Sheesha Lounge is an uncomfortable place as I do hang out there with mates and none of us have ever felt uncomfortable, in fact we have always been welcomed and the staff have always been very friendly. As for the 'AK47' this is yes I do admit a strong sheesha and isn't for the light headed person but there is nothing wrong with a stronger sheesha, if you have been smoking for a while then maybe this is the type of sheesha for you but if you are a first timer then maybe not. By the things that you have said it doesn't sound like you have been to the same place that I go to. My opinions are rather the opposite to yours as I thought that Babouche in Moseley was very uncomfortable and the sheesha's were horrible, they charge too much for what they are selling and the atmosphere in there is very dark I could just about see what i was drinking. The staff are very miserable and they didn't give me the hospitality that i receive at the Sheesha Lounge.
I have also been to the Custard Factory which yes is nice but is very small and i didn't like the fact that we had to sit on the floor which made me very uncomfortable straight away, the sheesha was better than Babouche but not as nice as Sheesha Lounge. In my opinion Babouche gets thumbs down, Custard Factory gets a Moderate and Sheesha Lounge gets a THUMBS UP!!
Miroslav Stephanovic
I'm a experienced sheesha smoker and have sampled sheesha from the middle east, north Africa, Eastern Europe, South Asia, various places in Paris, USA and not to forget Edgware road in London, Its really not just an Arabic tradition!!
My verdict on the Birmingham Sheesha scene:
Sheesha lounge Brighten Road: On entrance the place captivates your senses and gives you a feeling of good community spirit. There are a great blend of people from the inner parts of the city that all visit this place. We ordered a 'AK47' that was not on the menu but recommended by a friend from Uni, a bit pricey i found. On ordering the waiter gave us a cheeky smile. We later realised why.
After we ordered things became rather hostile, i felt we were constantly watched and other visitors were not very friendly to us, my female friends were very uncomfortable. The sheesha started off great, but soon I began to feel rather ill. I really feel there is definitely more to this 'SECRET' sheesha than what is exposed to the customer. We noticed other visitors were timed and things became rather hostile when certain visitors were asked to leave. I really felt put off sheesha because of this experience and it took a lot for me to go to another Sheesha lounge in Birmingham. Sadly a big thumbs down from me.
Baboush Lounge Mossley: Situated in a real cosmopolitan setting of Mossley this Sheesha lounge reminded me of Paris. However there was something missing. The decor is fantastic, but the prices are outrageous. For these prices I was expecting a ROYAL service and sheesha. The pipes were average, the tobacco a basic brand, the service poor. This place is much better than Sheesha lounge, however it does not live up to its exclusive chic reputation. Our bill came to a stunning £30.
Sheesha Cafe custard factory: A friend from Kerrangradio.com recommended this place. It is Situated in a secluded part of the city center. If you don't know Birmingham this place is hard to find. Parking is also difficult. First impressions were somewhat negative, though the ambiance in this place certainly does blow your mind. The music was a complete mixture and very entertaining. We ordered a Mango/Grape twist and mint teas. The tea was pre-sweetened (not to everyones taste) though the waiters did ask us if we wanted it sweetened and we did say yes!
The decor is retro and alternative. There isn't anything over the top about this place, and their prices reflect this - £13 for two Sheesha and two mint teas. We found that the place was really small, but this adds to the ambiance. There are two floors, the upstairs a loungey lofty space, down stairs more enclosed. This place illustrates what sheesha is all about, there is nothing pretentious or hostile at all. Definitely a place you can take people who are new\experienced smokers and its also great value for your money.

Hi, this is my first post on here and my last, so if anyone does post with my name after this--it's not me! :-)
I hope everyone is well and in good health. I will be sending out an email very soon to those of you who have given me your details over the last year or so. If you are not on the list, then I must apologise and ask your forgiveness. I can be contacted on sheenquasi@yahoo.com if you need me.
A number of people have asked me what is going on and whether I am still involved in the Sheesha business etc etc. I feel I need to clarify my position and dismiss any rumours, lol.
I am no longer involved in Sheesha (Custard Factory). I want to offer my thanks and gratitude to Allah for making things happen and to the customers (now good friends) who have shown me love and loyalty for the time I was there.
At this moment in time I am close to opening another business, which I am sure you will hear about soon and also involved in some nightlife. I'm sure I have shared a dancefloor with a number of you! However, my new business venture is not related to Sheesha. If the law in April 2007 (inshallah) is agreeable with the smoking of Sheesha, then I will probably consider it once again.
Finally I must offer my thanks to the BBC for their work in providing this forum.
Much love, peace and happiness to you all.

thers alota sheesha/hooka bars on wilmslow road, rusholme, in manchester...pretty kool to go in...order a drink and a hooka...

Been to most of the shisha places in brum and here's my take on it:
Sheesha Lounge-Bighton St, good shisha's but awful crowd, some too young to be in there. Also the place is a little small & pokey and the staff a bit slimey.
Mojo's-Contemporary but lacks any real buzz about it, shisha's are ok.
Babouche Lounge-Moseley. The classiest joint by far, very cool & hip. Really great crowd, mainly women but depends which night of the week you go. Brilliant music, they do arab night and stuff all over the place. Been here quite a lot and their shisha's were pretty bad to start with but for the past few months they have been great and certainly up there with the best. Only negative is that its very, very pricey but that's why they've got such a chic crowd I suppose.
Ali baba's- More traditional like the ones in Egypt, nice people and great shisha's but again atmosphere and decor really flat and not impressive. You can buy tobbacoo and other things here though which is great and also its pretty reasonably priced but not a place to take people to impress.
The rest not really worth commenting on.

best sheesha around in sheesha palace coventry rd
bano_mikee_mikee
I'd recommend MOJOS on Bristol Road, for a blast of good Shisha. Friendly, polite and a real chilled out atmosphere. Far from your average sheesha bar. Girls can relax and enjoy without the usual hassle.
Ali
Atlas on the Bristol Road in Birmingham is the best quality sheesha u'll get and same too with the arab food.
belinda
i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can anyone tell me where in nottingham i can buy the wet tabacco
Sir Smokealot
Kareena come on whos leg you trying to pull, all experianced sheesha smokers know that mojo's is the last place for a "real good night out" my bedrooms more creative than that doctors waiting room. And dont let me get started about their coal tasting sheesha. My advice go across the road to Ali Baba's for a nice cheap student atmosphere.Sheesha Lounge in Moseley has by far the best smoking, tasting sheesha only problem is space, it gets quite busy, once you get your seat, its worth the wait!rumour has it expansion is in the pipeline. . . yippiee!
angel
Shisha contains high concentrations of many harmful substances, primarily nicotine and tar. A single use of shisha is = to 20 cigarettes - u decide, whether its harmful or not now. Of course shisha is harmful for health, tiki. Pls dont get into it and 4 the rest of u who are hooked - quit b4 the choice is no longer urs 2 make..
sufi

for a real good night out at a sheesha place , i found mojos on bristol rd, the staff were very good(mainly girls serving)i was impressed with the standard, its close to the university, has aa cool atmosphere to it, i suggest you try it, also sheesha lounge in moseley was not a place i would like to go to again, yusufs also could do with improvement and drop the food id say
smaj
shisha is the best past-time.it also helps with your social life if you smoke in the shisha cafes/bars. and it is very relaxing.i recommend smoking shisha after eating a good meal.(with a cup of tea)
farhan khan
in this modern anti smoking culture being brought about by this radical group anti-smokers, se see a decline of free choice. thougth i do not support cigarettes, i don't se why designated smoking areas should be apposed, shisha is not addictive nor does it come ANYWHERE near the harmfulness of cigarettes.
sam
The guys at sheesha lounge(moseley)are cute xxx. ps. the sheeshas are by far the best
Nina
We bought a pipe and tobacco back from Tunisia and we use it to relax every evening! It really is FABULOUS!!!

Hookah lounges are awesome places. In the Chicago-land area there's plenty of them around, and I hope to see more! I honestly am not going to say one way or the other on the health impact, because there's no evidence to back it up, but I will say that I have smoked cigarettes, cigars, and hookahs, and by FAR, the sheesha you smoke in a hookah is so much nicer on your lungs. My personal belief is that hookahs are an acceptable past-time even for non-smokers ... I just don't consider it smoking really. Thanks for publishing this article ... interesting read.
Khalid
What about the new smoking ban? Will it affect Sheesha cafes? What will happen?
ZULU WARRIOR
Take it from me, and I am a SHEESHA CONNOISSEUR (having tried sheesha around many many Arab countries, 'THE SHEESHA LOUNGE' in MOSELEY, serves the best sheesha in Birmingham. It is smooth, not harsh on your throat like some places and smokes very well. Regular coal top ups, and with hospitable members of staff all add to a pleasant experience every time! Other places in Brum including Babouche Lounge and Mojos can but try, still a long way to go to match the quality of the original and by far the best Sheesha Lounge, Moseley.
Nick
Ali Baba's on Bristol Road is worth going to, good shisha and Arab music.
cassie
its also growing popular here in asia.

reading alot of the coments on this page makes me think alot of u hav lost the plot. ive lived in dubai most of my life. ive been living in england for the past year ive been to almost all the places mentioned trying to find wat i would class as a real shisha place and to be honest there only seems to be one which is the sheesha lounge which is on brighton street (i think) birmingham. i dont live in birmingham but i always try and go twice a week its alot cheaper than going to dubai but yet its like being bak there. The weird thing is i know shisha has been in dubai for along time now i actually prefer the shisha i smoke in the sheesha lounge. message to sheesha lounge please build one close to my home..(warwick)..:)
Ansaar
I went to a great new place called "SHEESHA" in Bordesley Green , Birmingham they do cakes and deserts and it is a really chilled atmosphere. I love it.
Sheena
smoking sheesha will no doubt become a fast growing trend due to the fact that it is a traditional middle eastern way of life which has been around for hundereds of years.I'm originally for Jordan and as you all know, sheesha over there is a way of life, however, I do think that these sheesha joints are having a negative effect on young people by promoting smoking when in reality we should be doing the opposite. I'm not saying don't do it, just limit yourselves and control your intake. Enjoy!!!!!
sukh

gohar
as far as im aware sheesha is not harmful and is part of the arab culture just as drinking is, in the english culture. therefore if you want to ban sheesha you should also ban drinking.

Replying to Asif. The best tobacco in my opinion is found at sheesha lounge on Brighton Rd. I've tried all the others around birmingham and they have no idea what sheesha should taste like. If in doubt try sheesha lounge.
Asif
What is the best brand of tobacco. I have heard it is Nakhla, is that true?

You have to check out the Sheesha place in Moseley called baboushka, Man it is ultra cool. The staff are ultra trendy, a mix of DJ's, Lawyers, Jazz muscians & supermodels. Saw Natacha Atlas there one night when I was there and some guys from a Turkish band called Oojami.
Its seems to be a place where all the trendies & supercool people hang out, some of the women in there are beautiful.
Check it out.
Amr Diab's Manager
Whilst in the UK went to this very trendy & hip place called Babouche Lounge in Moseley after a recommendation from an Egyptian friend of mine. As an Egyptian I was very impressed with the place as it reminded me of some of the very exclusive places we have in Egypt.
Also I found the staff there to be extremeley attentive and well educated and some DJ's there with exceptional music that I'd never heard before. Next time I am here with Amr I will bring him to this place as it would suit him down to the ground.
Festa

Sheesha is the best thing ever, it's calming and you won't feel hungover the next morning! It tastes great and the atmosphere is amazing. My favourite cafe is the "Hubbly Bubbly" in Preston, the service is fantastic and the sheesha is deeeeeeelightful! Love it!

I would disagree with samantha the staff are attentive and friendly at babouche lounge in moseley. They have a vast selection of flavours from standard to premium. The shakes are tasty too. Its a hip place to be seen as a band called AIWA did a videoshoot there last night. Great atmosphere and bohemian cool. You are in the Village after all.Check it out

A classy and exclusive sheesha place has opened on moseley road/alcester road, in moseley village. A very eastern theme worth checking out.
