Bull vandalised!

Bullring management are calling for city residents and workers to come forward with information about the vandal that attacked its iconic Bronze Bull in the early morning of Wednesday 8th of June 2005.

Even if the damage to the sculpture can be rectified, say Bullring management, it is likely to cost several thousand pounds and take weeks to repair.

CCTV footage at the centre showed a lone male, wearing dark clothing approaching the Bull at 01:20 on Wednesday. He spent just over four minutes defacing the statue, scratching what is believed to be "Moynur" into his nose and "Husam" along the back - making deep lines into the bronze Bull which may leave permanent marks.

Bullring General Manager, Tim Walley, said: "When we launched in September 2003, the Bull - or Bully has come to be affectionately known - took centre stage. Since then, he has become one of the city's main attractions, with thousands of people having their photographs taken with him every year from all over the world.

"The Bull has become such an icon that some people believe that rubbing his nose brings good luck and make special trips into the city just to see him. Who ever committed this crime has done much more than graffiti a statue - they have taken something away from our city."

Designed by British sculptor Laurence Broderick, the twice life-size bronze bull was intended to represent of the pride and strength of Birmingham.

Tim Walley added: "He really is the star of the show at Bullring and everyone is devastated to see him in the state he is today. I hope that anyone with information comes forward and the criminal in question is made to pay for his actions."

BillyB0ng0 said that it shows what chavvy types we have in birmingham. that is a load of rubbish. just because someone vandalises something,every1 thinks it has to be a chav. what about the emo and goth skanks that hang around the bullring 24/7. and if ur thinking that it has to be an asian by the names on it and asians are chavs, well ive seen alot of goth and emo asians when walking around town.

ajs
Michaela 12 comments down is talking about respect and taking care. but when ppl like you call us dumb speaking brummies, its a wonder that no-one does care or show respect. you also need to learn how to spell. environment starts with an E.

kiran
whoever did this needs to grow up and find a real hobbie! The bull ring is a fresh project for Birmingham and these people are spoiling it, for everyone!

Rob Harrison
Idiots who carry out such acts really should be flogged why anyone can make a concience decision to deface a work of art is very hard to imagine.I see this kind of behaviour all around us day in day out,bus shelters newly errected are also targetted the education system really is failing badly, youngstersneed to be taught to have respect for everything around them.

chloe
the bull is our birmingham and nonone should vandalise him. GO US BRUMMIES!!!

Rosie Steward
This is stupid!

Abi Hey-Smith
I think this is very bad

mike
i fink it is horrible eho ever did this does not have a life :@

Sophie x
I think vandalism is a crime and the people who do it should get a great deal of punishment put towards them! Its not fair because its everyones home x

kevin
i was like why do graffti man!!!!!!!!!!!

john wassall
perhaps we should worry and care more for the homeless etc, rather than a stupid statue

kandah
that is bad because someone worked hard to make it for people to look at.

obah
who ever did this obviously has no work to do. this is a discrace. this is the sort of thing that idol people do.(if somone can do this to something witch dosnot even belong to them you can emaging what their living conditions are!!!!!!!!). any one who finds this amusing is obviously very idotic.

Michaela
Itīs just poor behaviour.Maybe the person ho did this should get a hobbie or even go back to school/college to get an education.I also have to ask where were the security guys, why didīnt they arrest the fool. For the people who said "Itīs only a bull" are you all so self centered that you can not see what taking care of the city you live in means. This is why Birmingham is known for being dirty and full of dumb speaking Brummies.TAKE CARE OF YOUR INVIRONMENT; BE PROUD OF WHERE YOU LIVE.

a brummy
it makes you wonder what goes through their minds when they damage a community statue. Its some sad person with no life who needs to grow up and get treatment.

big ash
i think its a bull and the bull is very boring so they should hav som graffiti on it because then it will create attention to oda people

Grumpy Gargoyle
I think that some 'vandalism' can be amusing and thought provoking for example the work Banksy However just carving your name in somthing is a little crude and just makes the place look ugly. If your going to de-face the bull take your time and think of an off the wall, amusing and thought provoking way and then do it you Ametur.

shannine wright
i hate graffiti because it looks a mess in our area people just thinks its fun to put our community in a mess

richard
i think that the bull is a waste of time and space all the money spent on it could have been used to stop teens from vandalising the whole of birmingham

Carole
What an absolute idiot, why ruin something like that? I'm a Mancunian living in Brum, I was so impressed by the city when I first arrived. Let's not see it go down hill. The guy needs catching and sending to a proper bullring...

Anon
Mr Ahmed's comments shock me... How would he feel if i desecrated his dorrstep!

Lawrence
I think all of this is such a mess. What would happen if the queen came to visit birmingham!!!

*Glaznozt*
Just another sign that this country is going down the pan. When will we learn?

Adam
This is just another piece of evidence to support having a citizenship test and increase loyalty to Britain. Then things like this wouldn't happen. The Bull will require time and effort and money to repair which could have been spent of something more worthwhile!

Hol
Yeah it's sad, and i don't condone people vandalising public property like this but to be fair, i'm suprised this has been the only incident and people are being a bit naive thinking that everyone's going to have the same opinion on the importance of the bull.

jon
has this person been caught or traced? surely the name can help track them

Kim
Just another reason to be vegan I say...

Mustaf Apu
I can't believe that someone has done it again, jumping the security barrier and desicrating the bull once more. I think we should all take to the streets and burn hoodies and effigies of Vicki Pollard and then ransack 'yoof' embassies (like schools and colleges) and hold big protests and threaten to do away with all young people and stuff. That'll get the message across that this sort of mindless, childish and violent mentality won't be tolerated in modern society.

jake ranni
i didn't like the bull any way, it's ridiculus that it's that much important

tsav
It shows the lack of pride some people have in their city, in the same that people who drop litter have no pride. The word I'd use for the person who did this is scum. But I'd have to reflect a little upon what has made them do it, e.g "yoof" culture, parental guidance, education, job opportunities. Whoever it was is fairly mixed up to do it - why take it out on the Bull, eh! I doesn't just send out the message that I am a scumbag, it sends out a (false) message about what the people of Birmingham are like and that's the sad thing about it. I don't want to be associated with that person, but because the statue is iconic of Birmingham, then I am associated with it and the vandalism whether I like it or not

sam
I think its absolutely disgusting. Birmingham is becoming one of Englands most loved city, who ever did it should have to parade around town in a cow suit!!!

3man
this is a load of bull who would do such a thing to our lovely bull

Michael
I am saddened, not specifically that the bull has been damaged - it is, after all, only an inanimate object - but because something that obviously means so much to people has been ruined by the selfish action of one person. That is the real crime. I hope that whoever did this will read the comments here, realise the hurt that their actions have caused and try to make amends - An apology would be a start! But then, I suppose you won't because you don't think you have to. I am not a Birmingham person born and bred but I have lived in Birmingham for three years and am very fond of it, and it's people. I really feel for you all, because, yet another thing which symbolised the greatness of your/our city has been ruined (Need I mention the statue in Centenary Square?)

ben 15
i do graffiti myself but i ask the local skateparks to spray on there ramps i would never vanda lise lik this !!

Bull
All it will take is a bit of wet n' dry, a cloth and some Brasso, and i'll be back to as good as new. I'm made of hard stuff, you know.

amy
I think that its very funny so the peple thet dosent like it take a chill pill

lisa
i think it is wrong to do but then again ppl think it is cool to do i front of other ppl so they might think i am being cool for doing this but its not ppl need to grow up and think wot am i about to do!!!

corsica
i am 14 and i think it is disgusting that people around my age can do that it is well harsh man! but funny to watch but wrong thank you and goodbye

Steve
I knew it would not be long until they started ruining the new centre

Laura Bellerby
This was a discraceful and disrespectful act and ppl need to learn sum manners. If ya wanna grafiti get sum papper and do it on there

hannah
im 14 and i think that it is discraceful that youth of around my age can do such a thing on purpose i would never think of doing a thing like that.

Manni
Whoever did this obviously has no appreciation of the historical symbolism which the bull represents within and around the Bullring area. I would suggest that any such vandals should receive the most severe punishment available within the sytem, to act as a deterrent to any future perpetrators of such mindless crimes.

rez1
Whilst I agree its just a bull, I also feel that Mr Moynur Husam had no business vandalising City property, and as I always say, how would he feel if it was his property that was vandalised?

Richard cv
they know who they are , just wait till they get a knock on the door !!!!!!! wont think its fun then

Richard harper
mindless !!!

james
about time brummies realised that theres more to life than city vadalism, i live by the sea in dorset now what a relief to get away from the idiots who cause mayhem ib brum.

linda and annette
graffiti is too common today disgusting to deface a beautiful bronze statue.People should have more respect for the environment in which they live.

Asian Brummie, Toronto
Its a Bull?..Wts all the fuss about...I don't think anyone would react this way if the names of the people who did it were not put on it. It is a little 2 obvious who it could be...If it said..."Steve" or "Ian"...You would think it was bad and a stupid stunt 2 pull...but its a Muslim name..so its "disgraceful", "really bad", "they should be punished"... Don't let them get 2 you, with the increase of violence and threats...they think they run the place. However I Personally think a lot of you are over-reactin over a "BULL?"...but then I also get your point, Im orginally from Birmingham and so I do care.It is stupid and immature that somebody would do this, and I know this doesnt make it better...but guys...its nothing new 2 us, ...so why are you so shocked? P.S..Don't Blame Security...People should be brought up to repect the place they live in. Birmingham is my home, I hate to think I'll come back 2 a dump 1 day.

tanya
who would do this ? what purpose does this surve ? i really dont see what the vandal has to gain out of this, if this gives the vandal a thrill then he must be sick

Harry
the bull is the icon of the bullring shopping centre, and whoever defaced the bull should be caught and prosecuted for his actions, and be made to pay for the damages.

Jay
Why the hell weren't they caught?? Four minutes is AGES! If you can steal a car in 2 and get caught what the hell was the security doing? It would probably improve matters if the security at the time were fired as its doubtful we'll ever catch the nasty little...

Patricia ,TORONTO
Send him or her to a Bootcamp ,put the names in the Evening Mail or send them to me here in Toronto I will show them what respect is for a city .This person needs help.I was born in the slums of Birmingham ,we had it tough ,I have respect for life ,and the world ,no excuse

Richard Iley
Was there no one on duty watching the CCTV cameras at the time? If there were the person could have been apprehended in the act.

BillyB0ng0
just goes to show what sort of chavy types we have living in/around brum nowadays.... hope he gets a weighty community service for it, fool...

Si
I don't want to live in a police state but individuals who act in this manner seem to bring us ever closer. I don't think it was stupid to put a sculpture outside of the bullring, we just trusted people to act like civilised human beings. Won't make that mistake again. And why, when we have such hi-tech cameras can we not get recognisable images of offenders? Wildlife documentaries can record decent pictures in the pitch black, why can't CCTV?

Liz
I agree that the feeble minded vandal will just get a slap on the wrist.

laura
i think its nasty what they did to the bull

Sarah
The Bull is the SPIRIT of Birmingham, and vandalising the icon is disrespectful to our spirit. People can die in Africa, Mr Ahmed, people can die in London: but no one gets away with trying to break our city's spirit.

Paul
The only good to come from this mindless act is the reaction of the people of brum. It stands as a signal that we will no longer stand back as weak minded yobs use the city as their personal playground.

Candi
Jules' comment earlier about stocks in the Bull Ring to name and shame the perpetrators was spot on. Sadly, this was vandalism that was just waiting to happen. I'm only amazed it didn't happen sooner. What a sad reflection on our city that we just treat vandalism as something to be expected. The scum that did this are sad losers who have no pride.

Me. Ben Goodman
This Is Discraceful And ICon Thing Like The Bull 'Vandalised' Im A 13 Teen Year Old And Who Ever Done This Has No Respect For The City And What The City Has Done For Him/Her.

zara webb
i think its a disgrace that someone feels the need to graffiti on birmingham's new statue. why though what is the need??so does this mean that the security is not as prioritised as they say? you would of thought it was seen as someone was shot there not too long back.

Jules
Yobs spoilt the Bull Ring in the 70s & 80s for shoppers - looks like we're allowing them to do it again. I'd like to see public stocks in the Bull Ring where vandals can be put on display and shamed.

amy roberts
i think it's a shame that someone has done this to one of a great city's many sculptures. It's a lovely bull which tourists and locals alike love.

Mark Morell
so much for the cctv! the technologys so good now theres really no excuse for the recordings they have of the bull being vandalised being of little use, theres also cctv all over Birmingham, does this not work well either? its a great message to send to potential criminals - dont worry about crime in Birmingham as the recordings are useless anyway..

mr ahmed
what all the fuss about. people r dyung in africa cos theres no food and u guys r complaining bout a bull. so what!! big deal!!

matthew perry
its just disrespect theyshould of been made to pay for a new one or varnish it again its just typical

Frances
And people wonder why Birmingham is seen as a scruffy city....
