A Jewish enagagement

By Simon Williams, site-user
A Jewish engagement is a big event, and 'the vort' sees the couple give their commitment to marry.

Engagement is a big thing in the Jewish world and in February my family held the Vort for my brother James Williams and his fiancé, Ann Greenberg-Block.

The Jewish tradition for the celebration of engagement sees the bride and groom to be and their parents give non-written assurances that the couple will get married.

Confirming commitment

The local Rabbi, Rabbi Tann gave a short talk at the Vort and asked the couple to confirm their commitment. The Vort was done in front of around 80 family and friends.

Breaking a plate

The Mother's of the bride and groom break a plate to demonstrate that the relationship is strong and the families are committed to the marriage. Rabbi Yirmiyahu Ullman describes it like this - "Just as breaking the plate is final, so too the engagement is final".
