Movie maker

Film maker Mark Williams talks about his love for making movies and the inspiration behind his recent film project 'What U didn't know about'.

How I got started...

From when I can remember I've always loved watching cartoons. I grew up knowing I wanted to do a job I'd really enjoy.

I started off by doing a GNVQ in art and design at college, then went on to university to do visual communication which involved illustration, time based media (moving pictures) photography and loads more things to do with the arts. The more I learnt about animation the more I realised how similar it was to making movies.

I went to university and got a degree to show my family, friends and people in my community that you can be whatever you want to be.

Inspiration behind my films...

Different areas of my life and things that I see happening around me give me the inspiration for my films.

'What u didn't know about' is aimed at the contemporary youth culture and the bling bling lifestyle. Some young people see bling bling as the way forward to being successful..

The film is about four friends that used to be in a gang. Three left the gang but one is still left in. The friends sit around talking about how it used to be back in the day and how it is now.

Young talent...

The point I'm trying to get across in the film is that not all young black males are going to be drug dealers. There's lots of guys out there that want to achieve, have goals and ambitions.

Everyone involved in the production of 'What U didn't know about' are all Birmingham based.

All the actors are from hip-hop crews. They've done some drama in the past but on a lot smaller scale. The film was an opportunity for them to show their acting skills. The music in the film was supplied by local producers Dark Quartz and the Royalst.

I want to show people that there's so much talent out there in our community and it should be exploited positively.

The talent in Birmingham is amazing we just need a big break.

The making of .. 'What U didn't know about'

The best part of making the film is when I started to see things coming together. The was a point where everything was going really slow. I couldn't get any actors, camera people, lighting people, nothing at all.

In Birmingham there's so many people that want to do music but on the visual side of things like making films there's only a small handful of people that can help. And a lot of them are all about getting paid.

Fun making the film…

We really had a laugh while filming. Loads of times throughout we would stop and have debates about the topics talked about in the film. Sometimes we'd forget we're supposed to be on set making a film and we'd end up talking about anything and everything.

The film set turned out to be a meeting place for people to meet and talk. My cousin would say to me "Who's all these people coming to my house knocking on my door…" (laughs)

Our role models...

I think it's important for young black men to sit down, talk to each other and debate issues. The role models that they see out there on the street are so negative. The bigger man on the corner may have nice designer clothes, gold, nice little pretty girl on his arm. But you see him in the signing on office every fortnight. What's that all about?

A lot young black men nowadays are not looking at those role models anymore and that's encouraging to see.

All a girl looks for in a man is his appearance!

Girls what U saying?..

Mans love the ghetto fabulous too much. If you aint branded you can't get no respect..

Guys what U saying?..

What's next for Mark ...

I've got quite a few projects in the pipeline at the moment.

I keep getting asked… "When you gonna make a film for the girls?" So at the moment I'm putting some ideas together for a film that will involve mainly women. It will probably be a spin off of - 'What U didn't know about'.

Just go for it!!!

When I was at school, I was always being told to be a postman or a policeman etc... But I was never ever told to be anything more then what I really could be…

I guess my first role models were the mans I used to see standing on street corners. They looked successful having loads of money in their pockets, looking happy, nice girl on their arm. I just wanted to be like them.

I didn't really know what success was until I got older and wiser. Now I know to be successful you need to be doing it the right way.

My advice to young people is that you'll get loads of obstacles put in your way but you have to overcome them and just keep going.

If you really want to do something just go for it !!!
