Kaye Umansky

Kaye Umansky was born in Devon in 1946. Her family didn’t have much money, so she grew up amusing herself by reading lots of library books. When she ran out of those, she wrote her own stories. Kaye still remembers one of her best birthday presents – a typewriter when she turned 11.

After school, she followed in her parents’ footsteps and became a teacher of music, drama and creative writing, but also kept writing stories herself. Her first book, Phantasmagoria, was published just before her daughter was born 21 years ago.

Kaye lives in London with her husband Mo, her daughter Ella, and two cats called Heathcliff and Alfie. She writes every day in a little office at the top of the house which is full of her favourite things, including a witch’s hat, a broomstick, a singing teddy and lots of letters from children.

Her many books include:

The Silver Spoon of Solomon Snow
Meet the Weirds
The Empty Suit of Armour
Pongwiffy
(series)
