Well fed
All the feeds from the camera crews and the webcams are piped into the stacks of kit in this tent. Well, with Big Cat Live and Raw over, the machines will feed no more. And somebody's going to have to pack all this away.

Goose chase
These Egyptian geese must lead charmed lives to have survived the attention of all the land predators and birds of prey who live here, not least the lion cubs. Perhaps their ability to move so easily between land and water is the reason.

Eye spy
White eye and two cubs have stayed put near the murram pit which may be why the pride have not gone very far yet. They are sleeping in the grass nearby.

Biccy break
Banded mongoose are easy to lure towards the camera - digestive biscuits do the trick.

Wing and prayer
One of the cubs has noticed the birds in the murram pit and stalked down there to get closer to them. The geese moved off quickly into the water but a spur winged plover couldn't do the same because she has an egg and two tiny new chicks. She distracted the cub by pretending to have a broken wing and led it away. Both chicks survived and she is back on the egg.

Long legs
Wow, the cubs have grown so much since we first started filming them. We are amazed at the growth rate of these cubs and how long their legs are now. The quicker the legs grow the faster they become, and speed is their only defence in out-pacing lions and hyenas.

Who's that girl?
This is Angie Scott, accomplished wildlife photographer and spotter for the Lion team. Jonny is a very lucky boy, he and Angie have been married for 16 years!

This is the murram pit, dug ages ago to provide material for the airstrip nearby. The water is quite deep under the floating weed. There are hippos in here and, on the opposite side to us, a family of Egyptian geese. The pride is here too, all asleep but with the interesting possibility that nine inquisitive cubs might wake and notice nine goslings and their very defensive parents.

Over and out
One of the three Graces asleep. It has been fascinating to spend time with these three confident young cats and it will be interesting to follow their fortunes in future. Will they rejoin the pride one day or set up on their own?

The two male lions have been walking close to camp in the area we call lake Nakuru. These was a wonderful moment when they lay next to each other with the rising sun behind them, back lighting their breath in gold. They seemed to be powered by steam.

Handing over...
Just leaving my tent for our last day's filming. I can hear lions roaring - probably the pride. I will miss being their neighbour but this camp (where the field crew stay) reverts to bush when we leave and I don't doubt that the pride will walk through here, have a sniff around and know all about us from the clues we leave behind.

Spot the cat!
Believe it or not but Shakira is lying under this bush! How many times do cars drive past sleeping cheetahs without seeing them?

Big egg
The second fastest animal on the plains after the cheetah - the ostrich, in this case a female.

Lone tree
The only tree and shade for miles around. Most of the Mara's trees have been destroyed by numerous grass fires and only the largest of the trees have survived. This tree is called a torchwood tree whose fruits and leaves are eaten by giraffes.

Making a difference
Spotter Paul Kirui definitely made a difference on the leopard team. He was generally the first to find one of the leopards each day...

A quick drink
Shakira surveys the surrounding plains for gazelles. As the day heats up the cubs get thirsty and suckle.

Cameramen often hope to film "two-shots", a presenter and animal in the same frame for instance, but I think this picture must be unique; the first ever lioness/toilet roll two-shot. Bibi was on her way to join the pride when she walked past our car.
Lion | 11.10.2008 | Mara time: 12:15 PM
Dangerous games
Even though the lions spend a great deal of time asleep during the day it is never dull being around them because they spring so many surprises on us. This morning the cubs found a monitor lizard in a gully and started to play with it, which sounds fun but not from the lizard's point of view. Two of the lionesses rushed over, perhaps thinking it was a snake which might harm the naive cubs. They bit and killed the monitor and left the cubs to their game.

We wish you...
Sorry I'm missing your birthday, bro! Don't want Big Cat to end, but looking forward to a party and to seeing you next week xxxx (Don't worry everyone, I'll be back to filming the pride right away - Ben).

Admiring the view
Predictably perhaps, at noon on a warm day, the pride are asleep under a tree. I think they had a disappointing night and failed to catch anything. Red was quite grumpy with the cubs earlier, snarling at them instead of playing as she would normally. She looks lean and ready to hunt which might make tonight's live pictures exciting.
Lion | 11.10.2008 | Mara time: 10:51 AM
What big teeth we have
White eye is being unusually playful with the cubs this morning. Lion play is mostly of the "come on auntie, let's play that game where you grip my whole head with you huge sharp teeth" variety.
Lion | 11.10.2008 | Mara time: 10:46 AM
Red alert
Red has noticed something. We think it is a group of vultures flying down to a carcass.

Out of Africa
The cheetah crew have followed Shakira and her 3 cubs up onto a rocky ridge overlooking the Mara river and the great Serengeti national park on the far horizon. Serengeti and Mara combined forms one contiguous ecosystem and the key to the survival of the wildebeest migration.
