The
military were called out to 88 Queens Road, in Reading, on Monday
morning to fight a fire in a derelict building.
The
blaze, near the Lyndhurst Arms in the town, forced the closure of
the Queen's Road shortly after 6am.
Crowds
gathered to watch spectacular flames lapping the building.
Two
Green Goddesses and their crews took just under three hours to bring
the fire under control.
No-one
was injured, and Thames Valley Police are treating the fire as suspected
arson.
BBC Radio Berkshire's Tim Dellor was at the scene on Monday ..."The
fire occurred at one of the busiest junctions right in the heart
of Reading.
"It's
a brick building, with a slate roof that's completely burned through.
"The
Royal Navy were here from early this morning...now police have taken
over the scene.
"Big
cracks are appearing underneath the windows and police are worried
this could lead to collapse. The Queen's Road is still closed."
Warrant
officer Mike Sedgely said: "This
is the largest fire in Berkshire that the navy crews have had to
deal with, we had two
full crews here with breathing apparatus."
