King Louie rock the mike in Basingstoke
Strike a pose...King Louie pout for the camera

The faces will be familiar but the name will be new to you. Berkshire-based One Iota submerged into the abyss of creativity and have now resurfaced as King Louie, with new material, a new recording and a whole new identity.

After playing with the Mock Turtles, Robbie Willams, Joe Strummer and even Katrina and the Waves, five talented musicians came together as One Iota and have now reformed as King Louie - named, I presume, after that fat orangutan from the Jungle Book.

The Berkshire band will be showcasing their new sound, identity, clothes, shoes at Drake’s Bar, Basingstoke on Sunday 25 May from 7pm as part of the Sunday Sessions live gigs. Support acts are Austen, Stupid, Off the Radar and Aden Pearce.

King Louie might just be one of the bands to restore our faith in popular music. They most certainly can be regarded as a pop band, but we’re talking more of an intelligent, mature brand of guitar-driven pop in line with the likes of The Who, The Kinks or The Beatles.

Drummer Smiley has toured with Robbie Williams and Joe Strummer and more recently has picked-up-sticks for his old muckers, Mock Turtles following their revival brought on by the Vodafone advert.

Toby played the keys on Katrina and the Waves’ Walking on Sunshine and also played for Rialto in their day. It’s no wonder these boys are so on the ball.

The new three-track CD showcases the best from this bunch yet. The guitars are raw and much grittier; the radio-friendly, sing-a-long vocal hooks are still present making them as infectious as ever.

Smiley, Johnny, Treasure, Marcus and Toby have enjoyed many prestigious gigs as One Iota including Guildford Festival, London Barfly, Kings Head in Fulham and were also selected to be involved in the making of the Channel 4 commissioned Gigmania Music TV pilot last year also at Drake’s.

Experience King Louie for yourself on Sunday 25 May at Drake’s Bar, London Street, Basingstoke.

Doors open at 7pm, late bar until midnight, entry cost £3.50.

Arrive early to claim your free copy of the new as yet untitled CD from King Louie.
