Soccer
Six is about charity, it's about football, but it's also about ogling
at your favourite celebrities as they run gazelle-like across the
pitch to score some goals.
When
it comes to D-Side, a boy band with five strapping young Irish lads,
the third reason will be paramount for their thousands of squealing
fans.

Says 20-year-old
Ryan O' Riain of their female fan-base: "Yeah hopefully they'll be
there, we'll be wearing shorts so, a lot to look at!"
Last week
they reached the semi-finals at the Leeds Soccer Six game, so these
boys can play football as well as look good.
I ask
them that with a name like D-Side, do they know the rule of off-side?
"Err yeah." comes the puzzled reply.
Will
the Belfast boys be playing on the same side? "Oh yes, though
me, Shane n' Dane are the main players.
"Actually
Dane won't be playing this weekend as he tore a ligament in his
foot last week, so he'll be shouting from the sidelines with the
others."
They were
hoping to wear their Irish green footie shirts again but, says Ryan:
"I hear Bryan McFadden has got a team together and he'll probably
cry if he doesn't get the green."
Ooh handbag!
So are
they mates with Westlife and ole Bryan, what with all of them being
Irish like?
"We don't really know them to be honest, we're more associated with
Blue because we've done gigs and tours with them.
"But
we're big, big fans of Westlife", he adds, "and we've
been inspired by their success.
"We
haven't had much contact with them but hopefully we'll meet on the
Sunday."
Despite
playing in Soccer Six "for charity" and "for the craic", they've also
got a new single to promote, called Pushin' Me Out, released on Monday
31st May.
It's described
as "sexy pop" though Ryan shyly assures me there is no sexual reference
in the title. "It's just about relationships and girls and how confusing
it all is" he replies.
They've
just finished shooting the video, which chronicles a 'day in the life'
of D-Side and shows live footage of their gig in Belfast, including
behind the scenes.
Incidentally,
D-Side's name comes from the fact that they couldn't "decide" what
to call themselves, or so it says in their biography.
I ask
whether their band biog doesn't follow the time-honoured tradition
of being completely fictitious.
"No it's
actually true! A lot of people ask what the D means in D-side but
it really doesn't mean anything."
With three
top ten singles under their belt, the time is ripe to conquer Japan.
Their second single Invisible is being released out there and they're
going on tour there in August.
But it
seems they've already conquered Reading, having done a schools tour
there about a year-and-a-half ago.
I can
bet that the girls from those schools will be there on Sunday cheering
the Irish charmers on, and it won't be because of their football skills.
