Written
in 1888, it is a tale of three men taking a trip down the Thames
with their dog, Montmorency. They anticipate peace and leisure,
but get their boat stuck in locks, suffer their own cooking, and
of course have to cope with the glorious English weather.
The
book is probably the worst holiday in English literature and is
still as funny today as it ever was. Readers in Berkshire will respond
to the countless local references - even getting as specific as
pubs like the George and Dragon at Wargrave. Reading is described
simply as "dirty and dismal".
