Written in 1888, it is a tale of three men taking a trip down the Thames with their dog, Montmorency. They anticipate peace and leisure, but get their boat stuck in locks, suffer their own cooking, and of course have to cope with the glorious English weather.

The book is probably the worst holiday in English literature and is still as funny today as it ever was. Readers in Berkshire will respond to the countless local references - even getting as specific as pubs like the George and Dragon at Wargrave. Reading is described simply as "dirty and dismal".

Alongside the Penguin £2 edition, Likely Lads actor Rodney Bewes (pictured) is taking his one-man-and-one-stuffed-dog live interpretation of the book to a series of venues around the county.

He's on at Theatre Royal, Windsor on 25th April, the Kenton theatre at Henley from 29th April to 1st May, the Yvonne Arnaud theatre at Guildford from 6th-8th May, Reading Concert Hall on 15th May and Oxford Playhouse on June 20th.

There are also events at a number of libraries throughout April and June - contact your local library for details.
