Ah
now here we come to The Old Manor, a delightful 17th-century
pub in Bracknell that was once one of only two buildings that
stood alone in the middle of Ascot Heath.
In
Tudor times, persecuted priests sought refuge here and hid in
the secret 'priest-holes'. One of these hooded figures however
still wanders the building, alone and frightened. Not as frightened
as you would be if you encountered him though, ooh what a nasty
shock. I believe he's been nicknamed Old Fred.
Though
he, my dear visitors, is not the only ghost here. We also have
a pub-loving spirit called Bert who frequented the bar
in the early 1970s. A spirit who loves the spirit eh! Hoho, well,
he appeared shortly after his death and can so easily be recognised
as he had a rather portly frame, red face and handlebar moustache,
oh, and he always wore a large chequered hat.
Come
on! This isn't a pub crawl you know. Now fancy a trip to the theatre?
Let us venture on to South Hill Park, but we're not to see a play,
no, instead, we're to go back in time.
This
beautiful Italianate mansion was built in 1760 and passed
into the hands of many. The last occupier of the house in it's
original state was Major Rickman OBE, who acquired it by
inheritance in 1929.
Shhh!
Listen…. Can you hear the faint ghostly wailing? Don't be scared
dear you're with me, listen, a rattling of keys, and wait! What's
that banging? Wrap up now as it's suddenly very cold, and oh!
Why did that stiff door suddenly swing shut? Come back here sir,
don't try and escape, it's only the Major.
Yes
Major Rickman, we know it's you, stop that noise will you. Now
let's go to the gents, yes, ladies can come too, for this is where
the gunroom used to be. This is where the Major shot himself to
end a life plagued by crippling debts.
Poor man, he can sometimes be seen at the top of the stairs, but
he is wary of humans and looks fearful, he daren't go past them.
Now
just near the theatre is the Horse and Groom pub -yes another
pub hoho! - where two mysterious occurrences have happened. Let's
go in shall we, and go upstairs. Look! Here we have an elderly
lady, she doesn't notice us see, for she is too busy doing little
household chores - unfortunately for the occupiers her cleaning
doesn't substantiate itself in the living world.
What
did use to happen though was this: The spirits cabinet used to
mysteriously unlock itself, even after the lock was changed….the
workings of a ghost who fancies a tipple I'd wager - apparently
it has something to do with a murder which occurred at the Inn
in 1810. Details of this was sadly lost however.
