David with children from Kisii

Volunteering in Kenya

Highclere man David Steggall is director of Kenyan Community Initiative support, a not for profit organisation which helps run Twiga Children's Centre in Kisii, Kenya. BBC Berkshire reporter Nejra Cehic went to Kisii to find out more.

The children who attend the Twiga Children's Centre in Kisii have little time for play. Their lives are devoted to caring for siblings, school, and growing and preparing their own food.

Now a Kenyan couple: Vincent and Abigael are trying to create a better life for Kisii's children with their Twiga Children's Centre.

David is a 59-year-old carer for his elderly mother. He has been supporting the centre since 2008.

He said: "We aim to help youngsters. Every time I go out to Kisii, the first thing that strikes me when I meet the children is their total lack of anything other than the essentials they need to live their lives."

Nejra spent one week in Kisii, documenting the lives of the children who live there and use the Twiga Children's Centre.
