Vienna Ditto from Reading were plucked out of hundreds of band hopefuls to play the BBC Introducing stage at the world-famous three-dayer, performing a 20-minute on Saturday night.
"It was lots of fun, but really nerve-wracking!" laughs guitarist Nigel Firth, who's played in a number of bands, including 90s cult outfit Riser, with drummer Scott Lawrence. And despite Nigel and Scott's experience, it was their frontwoman, young university student Hatty Taylor, who "cruised" through the set, while her co-musicians quivered in a panic beforehand. Mind you, their nerves may have been due to Hatty not showing up until half an hour before Vienna Ditto were due on. "We didn't get hold of Hatty for ages," says Nigel, "we knew she was somewhere on site but we were here for days without hearing from each other. "She just managed to get in touch before we were on, so it was quick bit of running round but it was all good." Playing before a crowd all wearing Vienna Ditto badges, the Reading trio could end up playing the main Pyramid stage like former BBC Introducing band The Ting Tings, who played before 75 people on the BBC Introducing stage only two years ago. "I think we might have had the same number as the Ting Tings," says Nigel, "and in two years time? Well of course they'll be supporting us!," he laughs. While the gig went down a storm, Nigel's most rock 'n' roll moment was to do with losing his laptop. "I left it in some backstage production office," he recounts, "and it turns out that Bon Iver (notable American indie folk supremo) had nearly taken it back to Canada by accident. "So I got my laptop back with this note on it saying 'This was handed in by Bon Iver'. I was like: yes! ROCK 'N' ROLL!"
