RaW

One fan's limerick comes together...

'There once was a good team called the Bison...'

Ahead of the Basingstoke Bison's game with the Cardiff Devils, the team and its fans again teamed up with the BBC's Reading and Writing (RaW) campaign. This time, supporters wrote limericks about following the Bison.

With snow threatening outside it wasn't much warmer inside the Basingstoke Arena as RaW Ice Hockey hit North Hampshire for a second time.

The Hampshire Library Service were there in force armed with examples of recently acquired ice hockey stock, a hockey quiz with prizes donated by the Club and a large supply of RaW storytelling postcards.

There was also an ice hockey limerick competition with the winning entries being read out over the PA system before the Third Period.

The overall winner Steve Vickery was presented with his unique BBC RaW Powerplay ice hockey vest by Bison captain Blair Manning.

Bison players will be visiting libraries in the Basingstoke area during February Half Term presenting quiz winners with their prizes, and Powerplay magazine will be printing some of the countless limericks written on the night.

Steve Vickery's Winning Limerick

"There once was a guy with no 'teef'
Who played on a line with O'Keefe
He'd been with the Vipers
But now he's our sniper
And he's gonna give Cardiff some grief."

Other outstanding entries

Mother and daughter with 'I Love Brad' posters
Two Brad Cruickshank fans

"There once was a player called Brad
Who occasionally goes very mad
His nickname is 'Shanker'
He'll soon need a good banker
This summer he'll become a new dad."

"The Bison this year have been cracking
And certainly haven't been slacking
So let's make some noise
For Doug and the Boys
And send them Cardiff Devils home packing."

"The Bison were having a fight
The match was incredibly tight
They let out a roar
And evened the score
One more they were winners that night."

"You may think that I'm an old crony
But I'd love to drive a Zamboni
To glide cross the ice
Would be really quite nice
Eating pizza with hot pepperoni."

"The Cardiff netminder Osaer
Was a particularly terrible player
You can't stop the puck
Mate, you're right out of luck
Go home on a wing and a prayer."

2nd prize: a RaW ice hockey vest
The winner's prize: a RaW Powerplay vest

"There once was a young fan of the Bison
Whose devotion was hardly surprisin'
She never got bored and
Roared when they scored
But cried if the ref'ree called icing."

"There once was a captain named Manning
Who spent all his time on the planning
If we put Braff in goal
He will fill up the hole
But Braff he spent all his time tanning."

"So when planning a night out, just think
Where's the action, the buzz and a drink
And whether young or old
Come in from the cold
For a warm welcome at your local rink."

This is the second time the RaW campaign has linked up with the Basingstoke Bison.

We've also done it with speedway and the Reading Bulldogs too.

Here are the winners from our first RaW match - the Bison against the Nottingham Panthers - in November:
