Coppell and United: the goals

Reading's last match of 2006 sees them travel to Manchester United. We build up to the game by focusing on the Old Trafford career of Royals boss and United legend Steve Coppell. Part four: Steve's Manchester United goals...

"Two goals stick out," says Steve. "My first goal at Old Trafford was in our second division campaign against Oldham.

"I hit a shot through about five or six different pairs of legs, and it trickled into the corner of the net.

"It wasn't the sweetest strike ever but when I saw the ball nestling in the corner of the net, and the response from the crowd, it was high emotion.

"The most significant goal I scored was in the FA Cup Semi Final against Leeds at Hillsborough.

"That got us through to the final and it was a magical moment for me."

'People expect me to be a regular'

The Reading boss says he's looking forward to visiting Old Trafford after almost a decade away from the ground.

"When I went there they'd just completed what is now the main stand, and you could stand up then, which is why they could fit 60,000 in what was a much smaller ground.

"It was a great atmosphere for those 11 or 12 games I played in the Second Division, especially when we had the old fashioned Easter weekend.

"The whole aura of Old Trafford became very special with the intensity of those three games, in what was a promotion campaign.

"The last time I went there was the last time I took a team, which must be nine years ago - people expect me to be a regular visitor there!

"The ground's been totally transformed and I'll probably be as wide eyed as all the players when we go there. It will be a totally different theatre from the stadium that I played in."
