Reading's last match of 2006 sees them travel to Manchester United. We build up to the game by focusing on the Old Trafford career of Royals boss and United legend Steve Coppell. Part three: Steve's first game for United...

"I signed on the Wednesday," says Steve, "the Thursday and Friday I never trained with the team, then I turned up for the game on Saturday."

"I had no boots because they were down with Tranmere at Aldershot for their game, but when I turned up at the ground Tommy Docherty said: 'You're going to be sub.'

"I said: 'Well I've got no boots.' So I had to borrow an old pair of Stuart Pearson's boots.

"We were playing Cardiff and there were sixty-odd thousand at Old Trafford, I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't find the place, I'd never been to Old Trafford before.

'I panicked'

"It wasn't a very good game, it was 0-0 at half time. About 15 minutes into the second half the Doc said to me: 'Right, you're going on.'

"Willie Morgan, a crowd favourite, came off - the Doc and Willie had had a few problems at that time, which was probably the reason for my purchase.

"I ran on just as we had a corner and Stewart Houston scored a header from it. A couple of minutes later I got the ball, panicked, had a couple of touches, then crossed it - and we scored from the cross.

"I went on to have a hand in another goal and we ended up winning the game 4-0.

"It was probably the most intensely emotional half hour I've ever had in my life, with my mum and dad, my girlfriend at the time, and all my family there. It was the most amazing experience."
