Proceeding with Caution

Five Berkshire teenagers have outperformed bands from across the country to reach fourth place in the national final of a Battle of the Bands competition.

Adam Saunderson, Joe Sellers, Robbie Everett, Simon Jackman and Zak Watson are Caution.

According to one competition they're the fourth best band in England - and they're all 14 years old.

The five, from Woodley in Berkshire, have been together as a band for two years.

Now they've achieved fourth place in the English final of the Global Battle of the Bands, held in Manchester - beating 10 other bands on the night and many more in two rounds of regional qualifiers.

"The boys are under 18 but the clubs they're playing in are for people aged 18 or over, so we've had to get special dispensation."

"It's pretty good to get this far," says singer Adam Saunderson. "It's fun to be up there on stage in front of people, entertaining them."

'Now we have a double decker'

"We just entered the competition for fun," adds bassist Rob, "for the experience of playing with a proper sound system.

"We didn't believe in it, to be honest, so we're a bit shocked to have reached the national final."

The band have proved so popular with friends and family that they can now fill a luxury bus for each appearance.

"We just took a normal coach to our first gig but now we have the double decker," says drummer Zak.

Special dispensation

His dad Simon says the rule book has been rewritten to accommodate the young band in a competition designed for adults.

"We've had a problem with the competition in that the boys are under 18 but the clubs they're playing in are for people aged 18 or over.

"So we've had to get special dispensation for the guys to play, and for their young supporters to get to see them.

"All the other competitors are at least 18, most are in their early 20s."

'Dividends'

Caution may have missed out on a UK tour and a place in the global final, but there can be few better springboards to success than time on-stage during the massive Manchester music festival 'In The City'.

"They've all got very supportive parents," says Tracy, mum to guitarist Joe.

"They're very lucky boys, but hopefully it'll pay dividends!"

Fantastic gig on friday! All four bands were great, Caution were the best of course!!! Well done for raising an AMAZING £2,400 for BBC Children in Need at fridays gig at Coronation Hall in Woodley. Great time was had by all!!
