Paula Ryan
Paula Ryan: put off flying

'Violated' by Gatwick thefts

When Tilehurst resident Paula Ryan flew back to the UK from Greece, she knew the extra security measures in place would affect her. But she was shocked to discover her bag had been ripped apart and her valuables stolen.

She contacted bbc.co.uk/berkshire with her story.

"When the bags came through, first of all one person's suitcase came through and it was all open.

"At first people were laughing and thought it was funny. The suitcase had split and there were bits of underwear on show.

"But then we saw more and more ripped or damaged cases coming through and realised there was a problem."

Marked increase

With passengers forced to place valuable items in the hold rather than carry them as hand luggage, suitcases have become a target for theft.

Police at Gatwick say there has been a marked increase in thefts from passengers' baggage in transit during the recent security alert.

Eight passengers on outbound flights have reported items stolen from bags they placed in the hold since the start of the scare - compared to just one theft over the same period last year.

"It's put me off flying. I felt violated. It's my property and someone's been in there."
Paula Ryan

The last five days have seen 52 reported thefts compared to 16 over the same period a year ago.

All over the place

Paula showed us her suitcase and told us how she had found it at Gatwick.

"When the bag came back to me the combination lock was no longer on it.

"As soon as I opened the bag I knew someone had been in it. My handbag was unzipped and all the contents were all over the place.

"I looked for sunglasses and my mobile phone - the only things I had at all on my possession that were worth money - and both of them had gone."

She says this experience, and not the increased security itself, has affected her confidence in air travel.

"It's put me off flying. I felt violated. It's my property and someone's been in there. It's not nice."

I returned from Orlando only last week to Gatwick i collected my bags 2 of which took ages to come through. Some other customers cases came through and had clothing hanging out of them. When our final 2 cases came through we grabbed them and went to our transfer. Once we arrived at our destination where our car was in storage i went to open my case and the lock had gone, when i opened it it was obvious that someone had gone through it, cosmetics and papers strewn everywhere and i could not find my sat nav. I loaded the car up and drove home (3 hours) when i got home we went through the cases,my sat nav was stolen, my wife bought me a watch the watch i was wearing on the way out was put into the box, the watch was stolen but the box remained and a sum of cash which was hidden in the cosmetic bag had gone. My wifes case had also been opened but nothing stolen. This was clearly done by the baggage handlers and my main concern is, if they can take things out of cases, they can also put things in. Not only is it disgusting theft, it is also a major security concern, drugs, weapons or any other devices could be put into cases. Something serious has to be done about this and Virgin who we travelled with are yet to reply to my email which is the only form of communication they will give me.

I flew back from Lisbon yesterday Jan 7.07. with Monarch, to Gatwick. My hand bag and toiletrys was ransacket and shampoo no longer in plastic bag and had made a mess. Gift raped present no longer gift raped but not taken! OK so far it looks like a security check. But the £5000 cash, was gone. Ouch. This is theft. Somebody needs to answer to this. Shut down, clean up there act and install better management. Bring back pride to the work forse. With insentives etc. Stop this violation. It can be done. Please!!

I came back today from Menorca Mahon Airport to Gatwick, at home i relaise that someone stolen my cd games and what is more important photo-camera with photos from my holliday with my fiance. Thats is really upset i can`t do nothing becouse airport staff and ground bagage service is rubbish! We have got restrictions and we can`t get nothing to hand bagage so what we can do ???? they are thievs who is responsible ??? ????????????????????????????

Steve
So the security around baggage handling is too lax to stop people walking out with stolen goods. Is it secure enough to stop someone putting a bomb in an outbound suitcase?

Sallie
I understand completely how this reader feels. However this type of thieving has been going on for ages at airports in the states and they fire the ones responsible and hire the same sort of lot again so it continues. I send my valuable via postal when I travel now to be assured theyw ill be tehre when I arrive. I know it is not always possible to do so I make provisions as the Idea of the thieves still working in luggage makes me ill.
