I do agree with your point about the pyraminds eViLegion, when I pass this mural I often think 'that is factualy incorrect' is it trying to say that the pharaohs were black? This is a ridiculous claim as the Ancient Egyptions probably enslaved the nubian. That said, it's still something a bit different for Reading to have.
Victor - you have misunderstood my point. I have nothing against people of any colour, but the mural ONLY depicts people who are not white, and what is more it has virtually nothing to do with Reading town itself. If it was truly multicultural it would examine the relationships between races, and celebrate our differences. It is truly bizarre that it should depict the pyramids, but not include anything to do with the native people of this country.I don't hate the mural, I am apathetic towards it, and can see no reason for it to stand in the way of this towns development.
they should do murals around leyton and walthamstow, the walls around here are so boring and dull. and i dont see anybody doin a mural on asians/muslims. someone do something!!!!
eViLegion,Shepherd,K.Keith Moore,Rob,Jon,Andy,...thankyou for those comments. It beggers belief that people like you who are surrounded by images of themselves should express so much hate and venom at a mural made by 1st and 2nd generations born of immigrants...who PARENTS left SUNNY Climes to help build up your infrastructure ,after the lose of your menfolk;can deny hueman beings to celebrate our existance and contributions to the society of Reading. All the racial hate that i had to endure at wilson junior school/highdown...not being able too get any jobs on bob a job week.....Its sad too say that you will never have Multiculture in any place in the UK...because you cannot legilate it or politisize it,,,It only comes from the HEART.I could protest about the Wilberforce statue..because as far as i'm concerned he was a slave master, and you celebrate him every chance you get.(He is no Hero to me)WHEN YOU INCLUDE ALL RACES IN YOUR MEDIA and make everyone INCLUSIVE in all walks of life and do it from the heart.I could call all of you names...but i dont hate people ,i dislike their ATTITUDES.Yes and i will put my correct name....coz i dont hide from people.Peace to all HuemanBeings and Huemans alike...Hotep
i say keep it, i remember it as a little girl and if we were near it i'd ask my parents to drive past just so i could look. even though im now only 19 i still look at it on my way back from work and it shows a sense of community and belonging. people shouldn't be so ignorant and say its ugly or racist. I believe the picture shows more power and sends a stronger message than people who argue against it...so your arguement is failing guys! its a part of history and shouldn't be erased. This is someones hard work and dream and memories, dont take it away because some ignorant and naive people dont agree.
MAKE THE COLOUR MEANINGFUL,THATS IT
It is a most wonderful art work and a celebration of the Black Reading and World community. A real asset to the town. MUST be kept.
I think its great and should stay. Whats more I think Reading Borough Council should commission some talented graffit artists to do something with they eyesore that is the IDR. With a big space like that you could make it look really good. Anything has got to be better than boring old concrete!!!
I think it should stay, it adds something to Reading that the City is short of, a little individuality, and its part of history. It should be kept, I like it.
Lets replace it with something that celebrates Reading's History and future. I personally believe it to be ugly and verging on the racist. It should go.
I like it is pretty and colourful, it brings life to drab Reading, i am only 10 but i like it!!!! pooo poo
When I was five that mural used to freak me out. Demolish it, its ugly!
It SHOULD be demolished, it is offensive. If there is to be true multi-cultrulaism, it should be consigned to history too.
I'm a visitor to Reading and the UK, from California. I find the lack of diverse cultural and racial images on television and in public life appalling. Is everyone in Reading so homogenous that there isn't room for people of various cultural backgrounds to express themselves? I was very encouraged to see the beautiful mural and knew that some spark of cultural awareness was alive in Reading.
I commend those individuals that sponsored the mural. They took a step in the direction of true brotherhood and a step away from elitism. I hope the mural can be preserved and continue, as the struggle for human dignity continues. Truly, A Luta Continua! The struggle continues!
What's with all the crackers here! You don't have to be black to take pride in this mural or see it's true beauty! i've grown up in Reading and this mural is nothing short of empowering. it symbolizes not only an interesting but great history... the only people who feel threatened by an expressive piece of art are men who fall weak in the face of inspiring leaders (like Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Bob Marley) reinforcing the spirit of pride and empowerment that our own society lacks! Reading is a multiculturally diverse town, this mural not only represents 'Black' history or 'dark skinned men' but the pride that follows history of any man of any race. Keep it... it would be a terrible feat if we tore it down. it's beautiful and most definetly brightens up our concrete village! as the great Marcus Garvey said -"liberate the minds of men &ultimately you will liberate the bodies of men". i know more than anyone that our youth NEED some inspiration.. be it through history or art. [& i'm not even black!]
Tear it down I say, it belongs in 1970's US not here!
The first people who walked this Earth were dark-skinned and everything that has come along since is a derivation of those early folks, so in keeping it they are representing all groups of people not just ONE.
Well, it may be important to remember that the 'reasonable man' adapts himself to suit the enviroment and the 'unReasonable' man adapts the environment, to suit himself. Therefore, 'progress' will always be in the hands of the 'unReasonable' man.
This work of art has had its time and is not in keeping with the fast changing new world order. It has served it purpose and i'm sure it will only be a matter of time before its gone.
Its just a case of Them offering the community 'leaders' something of a promise , just as a form of distraction (which wont be delivered on) and the artwork will be gone.
People tend to chat a lot about what they like to see and so on but we wont get anywhere until we begin to act on those words.
I live in Reading, Im white but I love that mural. Its the best raw culture in Reading and to rip it down heartlessly would be tantamount to sacralidge!!
I think more buildings should have good artwork like this on them - covering all sorts of themes. Graffiti is frowned upon but if you look at the quality of the actual artwork then maybe the perpetrators could be better employed to brighten up most towns/cities across the country.
The mural adds colour to the place and is a reminder of the vibrant community we live in. Reading and the surrounding area is full of wave after wave of immigration to the region. My parents are from different parts of the UK as were most of the parents of kids at my school. Our biggest rugby team celebrates immigrants and the new Eastern European immigrants are creating their own communities, this all adds to Reading as an exciting and diverse place to live.
It would be a shame if the landmark was lost but I believe that a new mural should be painted anyway, depicting the complete multi cultural community not just one race.
Art causes view and opinions for whom ever views it.If Black history was taught in Schools ,would this art be a more ,or less important
I think that the mural should stay as a symbol for the black community in Reading past and present and future. So Keith this is not racist it is black history which has been denied from us for hundreds of years KEEP IT.
It would be a pity if it were knocked down, its a part of Reading as I know it, a small relief from the duldrum that surrounds us. Reading is ugly, this mural is fairly ugly and maybe even a little racist, but its INTERESTING at least... something to break-up the endless mass of concrete and oracle that Reading is turning into.
p.s Am I the only commenter who can spell? perhaps.
Surely we are meant to be living in an "enlightened" age, where skin colour is completely irrelevant to any right-thinking folk. In this case, the mural, which is CLEARLY only concerned with dark skinned people, is a politically incorrect anachronism. It should be replaced by a mural of rainbow coloured people living in happy land.
IF THIS MURAL WAS PAINTED TO SYMBOLISE THE BLACK COMMUNITY JOININ TO THE WHITE COMMUNITY WHY IS THERE NO WHITE PEOPLE ON THIS MURAL
my brother in laws dad is on this and his dad is dead and he loves seing his dad on it if it got knocked down he will be upset because he goes and sees his dad regualy on it. this cant be knocked down
THIS IS A MAGNIFICENT PIECE OF ART EVERY TIME I SEE IT I CANT HELP BUT THINK WHY IT'S THERE. ITS THERE TO UNITE THE COMMUNITY AND LEAVE IN TOTAL HARMANY.
I was born and raised in Reading for 24 years and left in 1997. Each time i come back and drive into town i pass that mural and it's as part of Reading as the Lion, the University and the Curch.
It should be preserved for our future generation as people are too eager nowadays to knock something donw rather than preserve it.
I find this piece off 'art' highly offensive. It is nothing less than racist propaganda. If The National Front had erected a similar work, it would have been, quite rightly condemded. I for one can't wait to see the back of this monstrosity.
