Interviews

Read the post-match interviews with Graeme Murty, Nicky Forster and Marcus Hahnneman after Reading's 3-1 premiership-dashing defeat against Wigan. Send us your comments via the 'have your say' box below.

Graeme Murty

How do you think Wigan played today?
“Their movement and the way they went about their game - they were absolutely desperate to win the game and maybe they took us a little by surprise with the intensity they showed – they shouldn’t have really but they started superbly.

Seeing them celebrating, how do you feel?
“It’s horrible. I just want to leave the stadium. Fair play to them they deserve to be promoted but standing here watching them celebrating their promotion is doing nothing for me. I just want to get out of here.”

You rallied fairly well in the second half didn’t you?
“Yeah we did, it’s easier to play when you’re 2-0 down but we gave it a good go. Thought we deserved to get something back from the game and then they go and score a third goal, where I thought Ellington’s done unbelievably with that goal. It’s gone over my head, and I thought it was going to go over his head and I’d be chasing him out the box. I look and his feet are about head-height and he’s headed it in so hard it shocked me beyond belief. To be fair to the lads we never let our heads go down and we just kept on going. I really thought we were going to get something from the game but that third goal kind of knocked the stuffing out of it. I thought we were pressing hard, I thought we were trying to work things, I thought we were trying across in the box with big Les and Kits and Lloydy when he came on. But for Ellington to go up the other end and score like that absolutely killed us off.”

Were you aware what was going on in Vicarage Road and Pride Park at all at half time?
“No I didn’t know I’ve only just found out now. No matter what happened there it’s all about what we did today and to be fair we didn’t really start and give ourselves a chance.”

It’s pretty shattering after so much hard effort and coming so near at the end of it.
“Well we’ve done it again haven’t we. We’ve gone 46 games so close and then you get nothing. People saying you’ve done well and that you’re unlucky is no consolation whatsoever.”

Nicky Forster

The contrasting emotions in the tunnel are absolutely sickening for Reading.
“Yeah it was a hugely disappointing day for us. They took the game by the scruff of the neck from the first half and we were below par. We huffed and puffed in the second half and came up with a consolation goal but little else really.

Naturally you concentrate on your own game abut Wigan in the first 20 minutes looked like a premiership outfit.
“Yeah they looked very good and unfortunately we weren’t up to that today. Although it’s been a disappointing end to the season we feel that we’ve achieved a lot this season. It’s been a pretty successful season.

Do you think you’ll come back stronger next year?
“Well we have to really, we have to learn from this. Each year we have tried to learn from the previous seasons and we have to do that again, but it has been disappointing, especially today.

Marcus Hahnemann

At the risk of stating the obvious but, bitterly disappointing
“Yeah extremely, but we just weren’t good enough all year, we were inconsistent and you look back at some of the games we lost this year, we should have picked up some points then but it just didn’t happen.

Wigan is what we’re all thinking about right now, any moments in the season where you thought, ah we blew a couple of points there. Which ones stand out for you

“Rotherham, Coventry – Coventry away. We were just way too inconsistent all year, and that’s the hard part, we play 46 games or whatever, it is upwads of 50 with all the cup games, and trying to be 100 per cent every time it’s really difficult to get yourself going. Sometimes you are going to slip up and teams are going to beat teams who shouldn’t. We beat Sunderland away from home and we probably shouldn’t have beaten them that day, first half they were all over us but we squeaked a win in there. So we dropped points in other place but maybe it evens out.

Was anything said in the changing rooms afterwards?
“No it was pretty quiet. Coppell said a few things and the coaches said a few things.”

What you’re going to do in the next few days?
“Take a little bit of time off, figure out what we’re going to do. We’re starting a plan for next year.”

Oh well another nearly season gone, I was just pleased not to be fighting relegation with the Gills and Crewe...bring on the Hull!

Royals fan
Steve Coppell has a couple of months to rebuild this team and its confidence. Players are leaving other clubs in the summer, who have just won promotion but as he quoted, nobody will come in for any of our staff - obviously not good enough. Why buy 2nd rate players from Div 1 & 2 if you are supposed to be looking forward !!! It has to be done now to regain the fans confidence in his ability or face the backlash in August and we know how bitter and twisted Reading fans can get.

Will
We can get out of this division into them Prem. But consistency will only come with squad depth. Madjeski needs to invest in players.

Maria Gmiterek
Reading threw away their chance of reaching the play offs by losing games against teams lower down the league. We should have got into the plat offs easily!!!!!! The worst thing to stomach is that West ham are in the Play offs. !!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony
Some of the players, not all, need to show a bit more effort and pride for the badge. The supporters do it week in, week out paying THEIR wages. Its now time for Mr Madjeski to put everything he can into the club that he expects back. Its whats been promised for years but we always slip up towards the end of each season as if they do not really want to see top flight football. And Steve Coppell needs to take a good look at what has gone wrong over the last 4 months with his playing staff and no excuses.

Mark Hinton
Im a avid Reading supporter for nearly 30 years, but we need to put it in respect. In light of the trajedy that has happened over the weekend in Reading,we must remember it is only a game.
