broken jack

They call themselves an experimental rock band and amazingly they're still unsigned. Find out more about this Reading band who will blast your ears with their shiny and dark guitar-driven rock. You can listen to their audio clip on the right.

BROKEN JACK ARE:

  • Jonny Beale – vocals, guitar
  • Joe Williamson – guitar vocals
  • Chris Higginson – bass
  • Laurence Lewis – drums

broken jack are an unsigned four-piece experimental rock band based in Reading. They use the word 'experimental' to define their sound as they experiment with many different styles of music and each member of the band has very different musical influences.

They are essentially a rock band, but have a catalogue of songs that have elements of funk, stoner rock, indie rock, alternative, and the generally dark and weird, amongst others. Such a sound comes across fantastic live and thus broken jack put together a brilliant gig experience, with songs that go from foot-stomping rock to the dark, wierd and atmospheric.

They have a very original, exciting sound, and every broken jack gig is guaranteed to be a memorable experience.

broken jack met in the autumn of 2003 when they all began lives of laziness and drunkeness as students at Reading University, and spent hours upon hours jamming in a cold, fragile, soundproof-as-a-paper-bag drum room in the University music department, deafening other people in the building trying to learn to play flutes or pianos, and annoying most residents living nearby.

Laurence would regularly throw his drumsticks across the room in anger about the awful drum kit, there would be the smell of burning plastic as Jonny's amps burned out, and everyone realised that serious earplugs would be required to avoid tinnitus with Laurence's beat-the-hell-out-of-the-drums technique.

To begin with they wrote several indie rock songs and spent much time perfecting their own version of 'Hundred Mile High City' by Ocean Colour Scene. Such direction was good but it didn't last, as gradually the band experimented with more and more sounds and styles, writing much more original material and broadening their sound.

broken jack’s live set now incorporates many sounds and styles, but essentially they are out to be the best live rock band they can be, and their gigs are full of energy.

broken jack are now in the process of gigging all over the country, most especially in the areas of Reading, London, Oxford, Kingston, Cambridge, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Cheltenham, the list goes on.

Their current demo has gained much respect from many promoters and has had many good reviews written about it, and in 2005 broken jack intend to massively increase their fan base and make many more quality recordings of their material.

"To begin with they wrote several indie rock songs and spent much time perfecting their own version of 'Hundred Mile High City' by Ocean Colour Scene." Hardly the best way to promote your band in a positive light...

I have know Laurence (drummer) all my life. We grew up together and share some of the same music influences. I play guitar and we used to jam together. He started by playing snare in a marching band but soon earned enough money (putting up Maquees and working in McDonalds) to buy his own kit. He is and always was a natural, much to the dispare of his family who could hear drumming through out the house. A phenominal drummer and the nicest bloke you'll ever meet! I cant believe how well they're doing for themselfs these days. Somebody PLEASE sign them!!

I have heard broken jack live in reading and i also cannot believe that they have not been snapped up by a record company yet. I see lots of bands in the gigging stage and broken jack are by far the best and most professional sounding group, this talent cannot go to waste!

I have heard broken jack whne i sawn them live and actually went to see someone else. They were by far the best act there. Comparisons of the lead guitarist to Joe Satriani were not unjust!
